How to TOP with minimum study? By Pravin Kolhe, Executive Engineer, Water Resources Department, Government of Maharashtra www.pravinkolhe.com 2nd July 2013.

How to TOP with minimum study? How to TOP with Optimum study? Its wrong question… Correct question is… How to TOP with Optimum study? “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

How to TOP with Optimum study? What is difference between “Minimum” and “Optimum”? Consider a graph as shown here. On X-axis= Input (Study Efforts) On Y-axis= Output (Result) Study-Result curve looks like this. Study-Result curve Output (Result) Input (Study Efforts) “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

How to TOP with Optimum study? Minimum Study Efforts results Minimum Output. Maximum Study results Average Output due to stress, poor health condition & lack of concentration. Optimum Study results Maximum Output. You have to search for optimum study input, which varies from person to person. Output (Result) Study-Result curve Study-Result curve Max Avg Min Min Optimum Max Input (Study Efforts) “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. What is success? SUCCESS …is not always what you see ! …is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm. “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

Formula for success Success= (Intelligence) × (Hard work) × (Attitude) Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It is quite Simple. Double your rate of failure. -Thomas Watson “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

Formula for success Contd… Success is not an accident; it is result of positive attitude and hard work. To achieve a unit degree of success you must have all there ingredients. i.e. Intelligence, Hard work and Attitude. Absence of any one of them will not result in success. (Remember it is product term) Fall in one ingredient can be compensated by increase in other. e.g.: limitation of intelligence can be overcome by hard work. “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

3 Ingredients of SUCCESS 1 Intelligence 2 Hard Work 3 Attitude “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

1. Intelligence Intelligence is the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills. Extra-ordinary talent is not always necessary for success. With ordinary talent and extraordinary consistency, any thing is achievable in life. “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

1. Intelligence Contd… “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

2. HARD WORK शांततेच्या काळात घाम गाळल्यास, युध्दाच्या वेळी रक्त सांडण्याची वेळ येत नाही. “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

2. HARD WORK CONTD… Hard Work beats talent when talent fails to Work Hard. The Dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. There are no shortcuts to any place worth going. Remember that the finest steel has to pass through fire to become the best. “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

3. Attitude “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

3. Attitude CONTD… “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

Modified Formula for success (Intelligence) x (Hard work) x (Attitude) ×(1+ ‘Smartness’) Lets add one more term in above formula for success i.e. (1+Smartness). If you are one unit smart, your success will be twice, on the other hand, if you are not smart, then success will be one unit. Higher the smartness, higher will be the success. Success is highly dependent on smartness. “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

WHAT IS SMARTNESS…? Common Sense Vision Discipline. Team Work Courage to Face Challenges Good Health Do Not Reinvest Wheel. Get it Right first time. Time management. Computer/Internet skills. “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

In an exam situation you won't have time to write out a whole draft copy, so practice writing out good copies straight away. Short term: Plan for a week and for each topic. “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

3 steps of PLANNING… 3 basic questions & 3 steps of planning:- Why >> Define Objective How & When >> Create Roadmap Who >> Act and Update Plan:- 1) Define Objective:- (WHY?) What you want to achieve? Write it down on paper. e.g.:- “To Top XYZ Exam by studying 6 months” “Achieve 85% Marks in ABC Exam” “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

3 steps of PLANNING… 2) Create Roadmap:- (HOW & WHEN?) Take copy of syllabus and previous years question papers. From question paper find the important topics and chapters for each subject & list them. List the days in your hand. Deduct the days for non-study activities (if any). Reduce the days by 10% for Revision 10% for depression to arrive at net days. Now, calculate the number of days that can be allotted to each subject, by considering your interest, understanding and difficult nature of subject. For e.g.: Easy Subject = Less Time; Difficult/New Subject = More Time and so on. Prepare a calendar the Long Term Study Planning and keep it with you. “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. My notes are available for your reference at- http://www.pravinkolhe.com/cenotes.html “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

When & what to study ? When you feel fresh & energetic (morning): Start with theory and new topics When you are tired, (evening): Problems and revision. Have a look on syllabus at the start of semester. Don’t have habit of studying on bed. Use table-chair. Remember…! Don’t have a mentality that firstly I will complete theory and then problems. Both should be done simultaneously. “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

revision Read a topic carefully. Close your eyes and try to recollect whatever you had studied. Do this very systematically, step-by-step and gradually. When you stuck, open your notes and look. NEVER try to remember a particular numerical problem. Plan out 'trial' exams for yourself with strict time limit. “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/

This leads to an bad impression. Keep your answer straight forward, crisp & clear. Use flow charts, diagrams & tables. Absolute Marks Vs Relative Marks. “How to Top with Minimum Study” © Pravin Kolhe. PPT downloaded from http://www.pravinkolhe.com/
