China Continues On 26. How did the Chinese government react to demands for democratic reform? Rise of Zhou Enlai -Mao Vs Zhou -Connection with USA -UN Membership 2.Deng Xiaoping -Economic reform -Democracy -Tiananmen square 3. 1990’s China - Last of Deng -Slight democracy -Hong Kong

Mao Vs. Zhou Mao Cultural revolution Brought about resent to the government from the people Zhou came to power as a more moderate leader Zhou was one of Mao’s right hand men in the political party but was not as extreme

Connection with USA In 1971 Zhou invited the USA table tennis team to china to help with foreign relations. First American’s peacefully in China since 1949 Year later Nixon will visit and sign a trade agreement with Mao and Zhou for limited trade

UN Membership In 1971 after the Table Tennis team visited China USA changed its UN decision. Endorsed the People’s Republic of China over the Republic of China on Taiwan

Economic Reform Mao and Zhou die in1976, Moderates took control of the Communist party and elected Deng Xiaoping Promoted Four modernizations called for progress in agriculture, industry, defense, and science and technology. For farms he leased land to peasants for crops, any extra they made they could sell themselves. Allowed small private businesses and foreign investment.

Democracy The people thought corruption and bribes were common in the country. Chinese students who studied Western culture called for more democracy and an end to political corruption.

Tiananmen square In April of ‘89 over 100,000 students took to Tiananmen square to protest, called for Xiaoping to resign Communist took martial law, brought in 250k troops Tanks stormed the square and opened fire on the remaining crowd, hundreds died with thousands injured, over 10k arrested.

Last of Deng Continued economic reforms which created a booming economy Kept control after quelling protests In 1997 he died, communists named Jiang Zemin as president

Slight democracy Has had to deal with continued tension over a more capitalistic economy while having a communistic government People are allowed to critique bills and legislation for the communist party to fix the system

Hong Kong English controlled for 155 years Given back to Chinese in ’97 In 2000 USA normalized trade with China
