Chapter Two: The Curse of the Baskervilles   Setting: Baker Street   Plot: The story begins! Story of Hugo Baskerville (1640s) was supernatural. Summary: Sir Hugo abducted a young maiden, but she escaped and Hugo angrily sends the hounds after her. p. 23—The revelers found the maiden dead of fear and fatigue and the hound tearing the throat from Sir Hugo.      

p. 25—Baskervilles have been unhappy in their deaths Warning: Do not cross the moor in those dark hours when the powers of evil are exalted. P. 27—Sir Charles Baskerville’s death is recounted Lesson: Learn not to fear the past, but to be circumspect in the future.   Holmes’s Reaction: views it as a fairy tale

Chapter Three: The Problem Setting: Baker Street Plot: Continued Story Mortimer believes in the supernatural (p. 37). Sir Henry is arriving. Roger Baskerville (black sheep of the family) died in South America. Holmes requests shag tobacco. (pp. 40-41) Holmes visits Devonshire in spirit.

Chapter 7: The Stapletons of Merripit House Setting: Baskerville Hall Plot: Barrymore lies about his wife crying. Barrymore did not directly receive the telegram. Watson meets Stapleton. People of the moor, including Stapleton, believe the legend of the hound. Watson first hears the hound while on the moor. Watson is warned by Beryl Stapleton to “go back to London.”

Chapter 7: The Stapletons of Merripit House Clues: the telegram Stapleton inquires after Holmes. Beryl is afraid her brother will hear her warning. Characters: Jack Stapleton Beryl Stapleton

Chapter 8: First Report of Dr. Watson Setting: Baskerville Hall, October 13th Plot: epistle/letter form The convict appears to be gone. Sir Henry is attracted to Beryl. Stapleton shows the spot where the first Hugo died—fostering this myth/fear. Frankland of Lafter Hall Barrymore’s nightly vigils

Chapter 9: Second Report of Dr. Watson Setting: Baskerville Hall, Oct. 15th Plot: Barrymore’s mysterious conduct Sir Henry meets Beryl alone on the moor. Jack Stapleton becomes angry with Sir Henry . Barrymore is signaling the convict on the moor. The convict is Mrs. Barrymore’s brother, Selden. Sir Henry hears the hound. Mysterious man on the tor

Chapter 9: Second Report of Dr. Watson Purpose: brings further suspicion upon Stapleton Clues: Man on the Tor Characters:  

Chapter 10: Diary of Dr. Watson  Setting: Baskerville Hall, October 16th  Plot: False emphasis on the man on the moor Barrymores are arranging to send Selden out of the country. Sir Charles was waiting for Laura Lyons the night he died.   Clues: Characters: Initials L.L. Laura Lyons

Chapter 11: The Man on the Tor Setting: Baskerville Hall /Coombe Tracey Plot: Watson visits and confronts Laura Lyons. Frankland has seen a boy delivering the food. Resolution: Sherlock Holmes=Man on the Tor Clues: Unsolved=Laura Lyons is concealing information.

Chapter 12: Death on the Moor Setting: the moor Plot: Sherlock Holmes’s discoveries Stapleton is courting Laura Lyons. Beryl is Stapleton’s wife. Stapleton slipped when he admitted he was a schoolmaster. The hound attacks Selden instead of Sir Henry. Stapleton is “shocked” to see the convict. Holmes and Watson agree not to tell Sir Henry about the hound.

Chapter 13: Fixing the Nets Setting: Baskerville Hall Plot: Holmes informs the Barrymores of Selden’s death. Stapleton’s picture=Hugo Sir Henry agrees to walk home across the moor. Visit to Laura Lyons She did not know about Beryl. Stapleton dictated the letter to Sir Charles and frightened Laura Lyons into silence. Lestrade arrives with the warrant.

Chapter 14: HOTB Setting: Merripit House/Moor Plot: Sir Henry Baskerville dines alone with Stapleton. Fog threatens to destroy their plans. Holmes kills the hound and discovers that phosphorus was used to create the “glowing” effect. Beryl Stapleton is found bound and gagged. Sir Henry is delirious and must regain his health. Holmes finds the boot in the Grimpen Mire.

Chapter 15: A Retrospection Setting: Baker Street Plot: Holmes recounts the events point by point for Watson. GROUP Q&A: It’s your turn!
