Administration Section CHAPTER 31 Administration Section

Administration Section The fourth section within ICD-10-PCS is the Administration section. The character 1 value for the Administration section is 3.

Character 2—Body System The value of character 2, body system, has three values for the Administration section. 0—Circulatory system (used for transfusion procedures C—Indwelling device E—Physiological systems and anatomical regions

Character 3—Root Operations For the Administration section there are three root operations used: Introduction—Value of 0. An introduction is defined as “putting in or on a therapeutic, diagnostic, nutritional, physiological, or prophylactic substance except blood or blood products.”

Additional Root Operations for Administration Irrigation—Value of 1. This is defined as “putting in or on a cleansing substance.” Transfusion—Value of 2. This is defined as “putting in blood or blood products.”

Body System/Region—Character 4 Character 4 in the Administration section indicates body system/region. The fourth character indicates the site where the substance is administered.

Approach—Character 5 There are five approach values for the Administration section: 0—Open 3—Percutaneous 7—Via natural or artificial opening

Additional Approach Values 8—Via natural or artificial opening endoscopic X—External The approach for intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular introductions and injections is percutaneous.

Character 6—Devices For the Administration section, the sixth character specifies the substance being introduced into the body. ICD-10-PCS uses broad categories to define the substances, such as anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic, and gas.

Character 7—Qualifiers For the Administration section, the qualifier value varies according to the table that is being used. For example: For Table 302, there are three qualifiers. For Table 3C1, the only value is Z. For Table 3E0, there are numerous qualifiers.

Key Points to Remember The first character value for the Administration section is 3. The second character value for the Placement section has three values: 0, C, or E indicating the body system. The third character value has three possible values indicating the root operation.

Additional Points The fourth character value in the Administration section varies according to the tables and identifies the site where the substance is administered. The fifth character value in the Administration section has five possible values depending on the table being used.

Final Points For the sixth character in the Administration Section, the substance being introduced is being identified. For the seventh character value for the Administration section, the value indicates whether the substance is autologous or nonautologous or to further specify the substance.
