2 Diseases of the Circulatory System
CHAPTER 14 Diseases of the Circulatory System

3 Diseases of the Circulatory System—Code Range I00-I99
Diseases of the Circulatory System are reported from Chapter 9 of ICD-10-CM. This chapter contains codes for diseases of the circulatory system except for conditions that occur during pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium or conditions that are determined to be a congenital anomaly.

4 Structures of the Circulatory System
Arteries—Carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body (except for the pulmonary artery, which carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs) Veins—Carry deoxygenated blood from the body back to the heart (except for the pulmonary vein, which carries oxygenated blood back to the heart from the lungs)

6 Venous Circulation © Cengage Learning 2014

7 Additional Structures
Heart—Muscular organ located between the lungs and to the left of the midline Septum—Separates the left and right side of heart Left and right atrium—Upper chambers of the heart Left and right ventricle—Lower chambers of the heart

9 Acute Rheumatic Fever—I00-I02
Acute rheumatic fever develops following a group A hemolytic Streptococci infection of the pharynx. Categories I00-I02 report acute rheumatic fever. Codes are differentiated as to whether or not there is heart involvement.

10 Chronic Rheumatic Heart Diseases—I05-I09
Chronic rheumatic heart diseases result from an attack or attacks of rheumatic fever that cause damage to the heart. Categories are differentiated by the cardiac valves affected.

11 Hypertensive Diseases—I10-I15
This section reports hypertensive diseases. Coders should reference the start of this block of codes for instructional notations that apply to these codes. Some codes differentiate the presence or absence of heart failure or end stage renal disease.

12 Ischemic Heart Diseases—I20-I25
These diseases occur when there is an inadequate supply of blood to the heart or constriction of an arterial blood vessel. Diseases reported here include: Angina Myocardial infarction Chronic ischemic heart disease

14 Pulmonary Heart Disease and Diseases of Pulmonary Circulation—I26-I28
Diseases reported here include: Pulmonary embolism Other pulmonary diseases Other diseases of pulmonary vessels

15 Other Forms of Heart Disease—I30-I52
The following diseases are reported here: Pericarditis Endocarditis Nonrheumatic valve disorders Myocarditis Cardiomyopathy Cardiac arrest Heart failure

16 Cerebrovascular Diseases—I60-I69
Cerebrovascular disease includes abnormal nontraumatic conditions that affect the cerebral arteries. Diseases coded here include: Intracerebral hemorrhage Cerebral infarction Occlusion and stenosis of precerebral and cerebral arteries

17 Other Categories of the Circulatory System
Diseases of arteries, arterioles, and capillaries—I70-I79 Diseases of veins, lymphatic vessels, and lymph nodes not elsewhere classified—I80-I89 Other and unspecified disorders of the circulatory system—I95-I99

18 Official ICD-10-CM Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
The Official Guidelines address: Hypertension Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease and angina Intraoperative and postprocedural cerebrovascular accident Sequelae of cerebrovascular disease Acute myocardial infarction
