A road safety technical package Save LIVES A road safety technical package

Road traffic injuries: the facts Road traffic crashes kill 1.25 million people every year 90% of road traffic deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries Road traffic injuries are the #1 cause of death for people aged 15-29 years Road traffic crashes cost countries around 3% of their GDP The risk of dying in a road traffic crash is lowest in Europe and highest in Africa

Sustainable Development Goals World Health Organization Sustainable Development Goals 19 September, 2018 In September 2015 the United Nations launched the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – the development framework that replaces and builds on the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals. Road safety was absent from the Millennium Development Goals but road safety targets have been integrated into the new 2030 Agenda. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their 169 targets are intended to balance the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development, and stimulate action over the next 15 years in these critical areas. They include two targets that relate to road safety, one in SDG 3 (on health), and one in SDG 11 (on transport for sustainable cities). The inclusion of a specific road safety target and indicator in the SDGs is a significant advance for road safety. It acknowledges that there is a strong scientific base around what works, as evidenced through the success of a number of countries in reducing the burden of road traffic deaths. It also recognizes the importance of this issue to broader global health and development, and the need for countries and the international community to prioritize action towards achieving results even before the end of the SDG period.

Conclusions This new Package brings together a set of 22 evidence-based interventions across 6 strategies. The Package is not a one-size-fits-all solution but rather a guide for supporting decision-making towards achieving SDG 3.6 The Package targets national and local responses and should be tailored to these contexts. If put into practice in a strategic manner, this Package will Save LIVES. Download your copy at: www.who.int/violence_injury_prevention/publications/road_traffic/save-lives-package/en/
