Wiki&101 If your desired outcome contains an element of collaboration then consider using a wiki. ppt link:

Wiki&101 Wiki will allow multiple users to access the same url and make edits. Each user has to create their own ID and password. Multiple users may be in the wiki simultaneously however, edits to a single page are limited to one at a time. A second user waiting to edit a page while someone is already editing will receive a notice that tells them the page is currently unavailable for editing.

Read and Edit A wiki is located on the web so, it is accessible from any computer at any location that has an internet connection. You and your students are not restricted to working on a wiki from your home computer

How To… Click here to access tutorials giving wiki user information. Join Sign in Profile page Add a page (include the navigation tree info) Edit a page Embed a tool or widget Make a discussion post Check page History

What can I do with a wiki? Collaborative Work Group work A quick and easy website for making information available to others.

Viewing Privileges A wiki site has privacy settings that set the viewing privileges. This means that a wiki can be closed (not seen) to all but the class participants. Or it can be open for everyone on the www to freely view. Note: It is not possible to make any page, zone or individual component within a wiki private. The entire wiki is open for viewing amongst all registered users. It is possible to restrict edits by locking a page.

User Permissions Users have different levels of editing privileges that are determined by the owner of the wiki. Edit pages, add images, and join discussions. (Registered User) Manage pages, use all editing tools, promote or ban members, and invite others on private sites. (Moderator) Access site settings, manage pages, use all editing tools, promote or ban members, and invite others on private sites. (Administrator)

Editing Privileges Wiki access has editing settings in addition to viewing. Editing can be open to all who want to create an account and join. Editing can be limited only to those the wiki owner chooses to invite.

Group Collaboration Tools Discussion – A threaded discussion tool is available for commenting and discussion. To Do – A place to leave notes and/or ideas User Profiles – Allow for developing relationships and camaraderie between wiki members. Will take images and descriptive information with the option to contact one another individually via .

Group Collaboration Tools Each wiki page has a history link found at the bottom of the page. The History page shows: Who (identity corresponds to their profile identity), made what change, at what time, and on what day. History also gives the opportunity to eliminate changes by reverting back to a previous entry. Click here Click here for a tutorial description of the history function of a wiki page.

Wikis are Not… …not a place to load attachments …not a repository for files …not a place to post or discuss an individual grade, personal comments or any other private/confidential material exchange between an instructor and student. …not a webpage. They will not promise the clean, perfect code that your html editors will give. Minor changes in presentation may occur.

Build your wiki Free+Education+Wikis - a wider selection of editing tools and lockable pages. No premiums available so no push to upgrade and it contains most features. They offer educators a space that is free of advertisements. Free+Education+Wikis – Easy to use and purchasing privacy at $5 / month is reasonable. Produced from Creative Commons. – some issues with customer service/support when using the silver package. Before choosing a host give careful thought to consider prices, ownership of content, and cost of making pages private. To minimize confusion, you will want your choice of service provider to remain consistent to the multiple wikis that you are likely to create.
