Today’s Agenda Primary/Secondary Sources Group Work: Music Eras Group Work: Analyzing Music Videos

Primary and Secondary Sources Handout in Unit Three on our course website

Eras in Music As a group, research the era given to your group and report back to the class. Questions to consider: What was the cultural context of this era? What genres of music were most popular at the time? Who were the major artists? What were some of the most popular songs? Is there anything else we should know about that era and music, in general? For example, Music events, TV shows, Movie soundtracks, Awards, etc….

Identifying Video Themes across Genres Purpose: To encourage students to critically analyze music videos for connections to a larger culture. Groups will analyze and then report back to the class. Activity: In groups, You will select a type of music that interests your group (i.e. hip hop alternative, rap, soul, rock, funk, heavy metal, country), and find and analyze two music videos that you feel are reflective of that style. As you study the videos, you should consider the following questions:

Identifying Video Themes across Genres How are the following individuals depicted in their videos? People of different races teenagers women men parents authority figures
Does the video portray people in stereotypical ways? Are these reflections of real people or are they just one-sided characters? What lifestyle choices are promoted in these videos?
What, if any, trends in popular culture have been inspired by these videos? Do you see any symbols in this video? What do they symbolize? Why do you think that the artist used these symbols? What is the dominant message of these videos?
