NOTE: Your topic will be used for the next 3 weeks of class... Once you choose the topic, you CANNOT change it! Due Nov.5th. We will begin class sharing topics in groups. 6 The Thesis The thesis has three primary purposes:
It states the specific topic of the essay It may list the subtopics of the main topic It may also mention the method of organization Notice: Talk with your partner about the development of the following Introduction Paragraph

In particular, popular music varies from culture to culture and from generation to generation. In the past 100 years or so, there has been an explosion of popular music styles in the West. However, three of the more successful styles over the ages are reggae, punk, and rap.

12 The Instructions: Read the sentences…together they create the Introduction Paragraph. The sentences however are mixed. Your job is to rearrange the sentences to create the perfect introduction paragraph.

13 What is the order? (1) Therefore, workaholics’ lifestyles can affect their families, social lives, and health. (2) Because they work so many hours, workaholics may not spend enough time in leisure activities. (3) Nowadays, many men and women work in law, accounting, real estate, and business. (4) These people are serious about becoming successful, so they work long hours during the week and even on weekends. (5) People who work long hours are called “workaholics”.

14 What is the order? (1) Therefore, anyone who wants to drive must carry a driver’s license. (2) It is divided into four steps: studying the traffic laws, taking the written test, learning to drive, and take the driving test. (3) Getting a driver’s license is a complicated process. (4) Driving a car is a necessity in today’s busy society, and it is also a special privilege.

15 What is the order? (1) During this period, children separate themselves from their parents and become independent. (2) Teenagers express their separateness most vividly in their choice of clothes, hairstyles, music, and vocabulary. (3) The teenage years between childhood and adulthood are a period of growth and separation.

16 Notes to a Strong Thesis?

17 Strong Thesis State an important idea Must be able to explain this idea: The qualifications for entering a university in my country are unreasonable. When studying a second language, there are several ways to improve your use of the language. These are STRONG thesis statement because they can be discussed and explained

18 Not Strong = Can’t be discussed or argued
Strong Thesis Should not be a sentence that only gives a fact about the topic: In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer months are warmer than the winter months Not Strong = Can’t be discussed or argued

Strong Thesis A strong thesis statement should NOT state two sides of an argument equally: There are advantages and disadvantages to using nuclear power. Topic Sentence? Okay….Thesis? NO! Although there are some advantages, using nuclear power has many disadvantages and should not be a part of our countries energy plan NOTE: Not Strong = Can’t be discussed or argued
