Who is Amy? Monitor students progress to degree Ensure students meet all University, department and program-specific requirements Approve and sign most University forms (e.g. Leave of Absence) Answer general questions related to degree programs (How many units? In what department?) First point of contact if you run into difficulties

General Announcements Your is now on the department list: ee- Read regularly Or set it up so it forwards to your gmail, yahoo, etc IMPORTANT! Keep all contact information current in Axess

Milestones Milestones = graduation requirements all PhD students must fulfill at Stanford Qualifying exams (January of 1 st year; no later than 2 nd year) Advance to Candidacy (by end of 2 nd year) Complete an MS degree/transfer in MS units taken elsewhere Dissertation Reading Committee (by end of 4 th year) University Oral Exam Submission of Dissertation (5 th year and beyond) You will file certain forms with Amy, she will remind you

Milestones: MS degree EE PhD students must complete a masters in EE (or other engineering department) at Stanford OR If you completed a masters at another school, you will transfer those units to Stanford toward your PhD Earliest you can file that paperwork is next quarter… Plan to complete the MS degree by the end of your 3 rd year Refer to sample EE MS Program Proposal in your folder

Course Requirements Total units = units beyond the 45 units for the MS degree 21 units out of the 90 must be: 12 units EE or EE Related lecture courses at 200 level or higher 9 units of lecture courses at 100 level or higher in technical areas in any science, math, or engineering department taken for letter grades (A,B,C,D,NP) Remaining 69 units may be: Special Studies (EE 390, EE 391) Research units with your advisor (EE 400) non-departmental units in nontechnical areas seminar units courses taken Credit/No Credit

Course Requirements Courses below 100 level do not count typical lecture course = 3 units Must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0

Milestones: Qualifying Exams You are expected to take them your first year You MUST take them no later than your second year If you have never taken the quals by that time, you will be dismissed from the PhD for failure to progress You may be able to graduate with a masters degree in EE

Milestones: Candidacy Once you pass the quals, you file an Application for Candidacy form List course work beyond your masters degree Signed by your dissertation advisor and second reader Candidacy is valid for 5 years Form is due to me by the end of your 2 nd year

Milestones: Dissertation Advisor Dissertation advisor = primary faculty who will supervise your research and fund you Second reader = faculty also on your committee Dissertation advisor must be regular Stanford faculty (not Consulting faculty or Senior Research Associate) Dissertation advisor and/or second reader must have some affiliation with EE: Full Joint Courtesy Emeritus may be OK, subject to department approval

Milestones: Dissertation Advisor DONT WAIT to start forming relationships with faculty that may lead to them agreeing to supervise your dissertation If you have not advanced to candidacy by the end of your 2 nd year, you will be dismissed from the PhD for failure to progress You may be able to graduate with a masters degree in EE

Milestones: Dissertation Advisor I have a fellowship -- do these rules apply to me? YES! These are University standards for ALL PhD students, regardless of how youre being funded

Milestones: Candidacy By end of spring quarter of your 2 nd year -- pass quals dissertation advisor second reader submit a signed Application for Candidacy form, approved by the department CONGRATULATIONS! You have advanced to candidacy. You can breathe now…

Milestones: Reading Committee 3 faculty At least 2 must be faculty who have some affiliation with EE: Full Joint Courtesy Emeritus may be OK, subject to department approval

Milestones: Oral Exam 3o minute public seminar on your dissertation research Then you are questioned in private by 5 faculty members

Milestones: Dissertation After you complete 135 units and are only working on your dissertation Reduced tuition category for advanced PhD students – Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) I will send you instructions

Milestones: Candidacy Part 2: Expiration/Extension This topic again??...Yes… Keep track of your 5 years of candidacy When your candidacy is within one quarter of expiring… I will contact your dissertation advisor to ask about your progress He/she must approve an extension (for up to 1 year) Extensions are not automatic!

Important Reminders Preliminary Study List Deadline: Monday September 26, 5:00pm Must be enrolled in 8-10 units $200 late fee Enroll in 8-10 units every quarter (Summer optional unless youre here doing research) Tuition rate increases for units
