Video Cataloging: the Basics Mary S. Konkel Head of Technical Services College of DuPage konkel@cod.edu 9/18/2018 Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage

Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage MARC Review Tags are the 3-digit MARC codes found in the variable field of the bibliographic record Indicators supply information about the field, primarily for indexing, card production & system functions. Numbers in the indicator positions have assigned meanings, and in some fields, a blank space is meaningful Subfields are the smallest logical unit of information in a variable field and contain the textual information for bibliographic description. They are proceeded by delimeters (| “pipe” OR & “ampersand”) 9/18/2018 Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage

Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage Cataloging Review Copy cataloging vs. Original cataloging COPY> modify an existing record ORIGINAL>input a new master record Full Level vs. Minimal Level cataloging FULL (Level I)>preferred; includes all required fields; see Bib Input Standards MLC (Level K)>subjects, notes not required 9/18/2018 Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage

Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage Cataloging Review Why Minimal Level Cataloging? Constraints on resources Foreign language expertise lacking Locally-produced items of little interest beyond your own institution Time constraints, deadlines Retrospective conversion of older records for which you do not have complete info 9/18/2018 Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage

Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage Cataloging Review When to input new record b&w vs. color or colorized Sound vs. silent Dubbed vs. subtitles Different language version eg. Spanish Different machine format eg. VHS, DVD Changes in distribution or publication dates (watch for pub. numbers and copyright of container/packaging) 9/18/2018 Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage

Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage Cataloging Review Catalog/transcribe from chief source of information using the following: Item itself Container or label Accompanying material Packaging Other sources, including publisher’s catalog or Web site, movie databases like Internet Movie Database> http://www.imdb.com/ 9/18/2018 Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage

Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage Cataloging Review Catalog videos on type “g” workform (call up OCLC workform using command “wfmg”) GMD (general materials designation) = [videorecording]. GMDs are generic terms to describe the medium or format of an item (enter GMDs lowercase in brackets) Use 007 for videorecording Use 006 to describe computer characteristics if item is an enhanced DVD-- has DVD-ROM features 9/18/2018 Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage

What’s so different about DVDs? Cataloging DVDs generally NO different than cataloging other films or videos DVDs may have special features: additional language tracks; subtitles dual-sided (widescreen and standard) closed-captioning interactive menu interviews with cast and crew music video featuring movie song multi-disc “making of” or games 9/18/2018 Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage

Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage Enhanced DVDs What are they? DVDs with DVD-ROM features such as: Computer games, simulations Links to Web resources, fan sites Screensavers, printables Documentation, PDF files Music only soundtrack 9/18/2018 Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage

Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage Other Things to Note THE BIRTH OF VIDEO Betamax > 1975; Sony VHS > 1976; JVC DVD > 1995; Sony/Philips vs. Matsushita/Toshiba/Time-Warner; commercially popular in 1999 Standard info such as interactive menu, scene access, “formatted to fit TV”, region 1 DVD player, NTSC, and other “duhs” need not be noted in the cataloging record 9/18/2018 Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage

Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage Other Things to Note Broadcasting Standards NTSC is U.S. standard PAL & SECAM are European standards (definitely effect transmission from VCR to TV) System requirements note 538 DVD or VHS Catalog from the title screen unless circumstances prevent otherwise Find out what your local system indexing rules are. Look at your profile!! 9/18/2018 Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage

Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage Other Things to Note Advertisements and previews of other movies need not be noted Trailers of the film itself or bonus featurettes should be noted in the cataloging record in a special features note. Remember, you are cataloging the film not the special features Magnifying glass is a cataloger’s friend 9/18/2018 Mary S. Konkel College of DuPage
