Manifest Destiny! 9.2

Do Now! What is manifest destiny? Why were people willing to risk moving west? Who was impacted the most by manifest destiny? Why?

What is Manifest Destiny? Americans felt it was their “god given right” to take control of the entirety of the continent. John O’Sullivan Newspaper Editor: God “has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty and … self government!” Catchy term to justify American actions The Native Americans impacted the most

Why They Went West? Improvements to technology made it possible! Claim new land for farming New markets More living space for incoming immigrants Seek employment and avoid creditors What economic problem was going on in the US in 1837? Spread democracy!

Early Transportation Comparison

Oh Those Native Americans… Black Hawk War (1832): Chief Black Hawk led revolt against U.S. gov.t (Illinois, Iowa) the govt. wanted natives to move west of the Mississippi After 4 months and the slaughter of 200 innocent Sauk and Fox tribe people the natives were moved The Middle Ground: land not claimed by the natives or settlers (trade with each other) middle ground moved as settlers moved west Why did we went them to move west of Mississippi- that was our border “unofficial” AJ said we’ll move them west of Mississippi then advisor said what happens when we go there? Move um farther west - Manifest Destiny, Pacific Ocean becomes goal so they became a problem, Abraham Lincoln fought in the war - After that he became weary of war Rounded up innocent people said stay here you’ll be safe - then they killed them

Treaty of Fort Laramie - 1851 Settlers were moving west. Destroying Indian Territory Sioux Petitioned the President Treaty’s terms: Restricted Lands Cash Payments Non violence against settlers Pledge from both Why is this important? Foreshadowed Reservations

Go West My Young Man Santa Fe Trail Oregon Trail Mexico wanted trade with the US. Between Santa Fe and Independence, MO 780 miles long Oregon Trail St. Louis to West Coast 5,000 people annually Very difficult travel
