Ischemic lesions correspond closely between MRI and TTC staining. The space-occupying effect due to brain edema leads to a strong horizontal displacement of midline structures on MRI. After the brains were removed from the skull (TTC staining), the space-occupying effect caused an extension of the outer edges of the affected hemispheres, while the midline shift almost completely returned to normal.
