Percent Proportion Pg. 332

Ratios and Proportions Definition? Ways to express? Proportion How to write one?

Percent proportion One ratio (fraction) compares part of a quantity to the whole quantity. The other ratio is the equivalent percent written as a fraction (denominator = 100). 4 out of 5 is 80% Part 4 = 80 Percent Whole 5 100 out of 100

Key Concept Type Example Proportion Find the percent What percent of 5 is 4? 4 = n 5 100 Find the part What number is 80% of 5? p = 80 Find the whole (the # following ‘of’) 4 is 80% of what number? 4 = 80 W 100

whole Part = percent Let’s do some together! What percent of $15 is $9? What number is 40% of 120? 18 is 25% of what number? whole Part = percent

whole Part = percent Your Turn! What percent of 25 is 20? What number is 5% of 60? 40% of what number is 26? whole Part = percent

Logical How many students are wearing blue shirts? How many students are in the class? What percent of the class is wearing blue? Now…make up your our percent proportion. Use any data from our class that you can gather.

Zoo If 200 of the 550 reptiles in a zoo are on display, what percent of the reptiles are on display? Round to the nearest whole number.

Pies Miss Murphy ate 15% of the pies at Thanksgiving dinner. If she ate 3 pies, how many pies were there? Now using the same proportion, create your own problem involving a percent.
