Research, Writing and Presentation Task N4 Reports Research, Writing and Presentation Task

What is a report? A detailed, factual and formal piece of writing Used to organise and convey information It is different from an essay because it is written with headings and chapters It should also include images, graphics, tables etc. The layout should help to effectively deliver information to the reader

Why do reports? Possibly the single most useful thing you learn in an English class Also allows you to meet all of the ‘Creation & Production’ requirements for the course

Why do reports? 1 Create and produce straightforward written texts by: 1.1 Selecting ideas and content, using a format and structure appropriate to purpose and audience 1.2 Applying knowledge of language in terms of language choice and technical accuracy 1.3 Communicating meaning at first reading

Why do reports? Take part in straightforward spoken interactions by: 2.1 Selecting ideas and content, using a format and structure appropriate to purpose and audience 2.2 Applying knowledge of language in terms of language choice 2.3 Communicating meaning at first hearing 2.4 Using aspects of non-verbal communication

What information is required? This depends on your chosen topic, but generally: Background information to introduce the topic Specific information about some key aspects Assume that the reader knows nothing about your chosen subject

How do I plan my report? Gather all the information that you can before you start writing the report Organise the information into appropriate categories (usually 4 or 5) Remember to keep a note of ALL sources for your bibliography

How do I write my report? Use a formal style at all times: “Well the reason I like football is because it’s really good fun and all my friends play it.” “The Nou Camp is really big and cool and is where Barcelona play.” “Football is a hugely enjoyable and incredibly popular sport that is played all over the world.”

How do I write my report? Use and adapt one of the templates available Your report should include: A front cover A contents page Several categories Space for images, charts, tables etc. A bibliography page

How do I write my report? Don’t forget the basics! Spelling Sentences and paragraphs Punctuation and capital letters Check your work carefully before handing it in! This is all referred to as ‘technical accuracy’

How do know when I’m finished? Is your report detailed and thorough? Does it convey information in an organised and effective way? Is your writing ‘technically accurate’? Have you included non-textual information? Does it have a full bibliography? Is it as good as it can possibly be?
