R.A.M.P. up for Safety

Four Principles of Safety Recognize: What am I working with? Read SDS and literature Know hazard classes, exposure routes, possibilities for runaway reaction, equipment hazards Housekeeping issues Consider other hazards: nanomaterial, biological, electrical, radiation, shop, cryogen, etc. Assess: How bad is it? Hazard rating system (GHS), routes of exposure, exposure limits, exposure assessment methods Evaluate the risks, exposure assessments Learn lessons from incidents Minimize: How can I reduce the risk? Engineering hazard controls: hoods, relief values, signage (see engineering controls Safety Moment) Administrative: training, work hours, appropriate lab behavior PPE Chemical storage: separate incompatible materials, dispose of old chemicals, test for peroxides Housekeeping: remove incompatible materials, inspect equipment Proper waste management Prepare for Emergencies: What should I if…? Emergency responses for fire (different classes), chemical spill and injury; How to get help Use of all the safety equipment available (fire extinguishers, eyewashes, safety showers) Basic first aid Spill kit use  Practice with drills and excersizes
