Connecting hardware and Booting the computer EIT, © Author Gay Robertson, 2016

First things to check if you have identified a problem … First things to check if you have identified a problem ….. could one of these offer a solution? Is the power on at the wall? Are all the plugs plugged in correctly? Are the plugs firmly seated? Are all the switches turned on - check the system unit, VDU, printer

Connections for the Basic components of a PC system Screen System Unit Printer Keyboard Mouse Power supply Cables

Connecting the devices … cables from the devices plug into the back of the system unit into ports (ports are sockets which devices plug into) plug in gently so you don’t break the little pins cables are marked and colour coded so that you plug the right device into the right port or socket

What goes where? Joystick Mouse Network connection Printer USB connection for eg memory stick Screen Keyboard How do we know where they go? We look for the little pictures next to the ports!! Note: newer computers have USB mouse and keyboard connections

Cables connect to the motherboard inside the system unit Network Monitor Printer Joystick Keyboard Mouse

Did this give a solution to the problem you identified? Work out where each component is connected. If something isn’t working, this is the first thing to check. Did this give a solution to the problem you identified?

What action could you take next? Often if you re-start or re-boot your computer the problem will disappear Let’s look at what this means … and how you do it

Cold boot … Computer is switched off and must power up from a “cold” condition using the instructions from ROM (Read Only Memory – loaded at the factory), to make it work Next the system software (for example, Windows) loads into RAM Remember what system software does… It takes care of the operation of the computer It enables the user, hardware and application software to interact

Restart (or warm boot) the computer – use this when your computer “hangs” - program not responding, keyboard and mouse not working (this closes all programs, and re-loads the system software (eg Windows) BUT does not turn the computer off) …… HOW DO I DO THIS?

Windows 10 Click on Choose Restart Read the message: all programs will be closed, Windows will be shut down and then Windows will start again. Power will not go off, computer will not shut down

Windows 7 Press + and hold both down firmly Touch This may appear Repeat this again to reboot

OR Windows 07 Click on Choose Restart Read the message: all programs will be closed, Windows will be shut down and then Windows will start again. Power will not go off, computer will not shut down

OR Windows XP Click on Choose Restart

Problem not solved – maybe shut down required and full restart (cold boot)

Shut Down What it does: Closes documents and exits the software programs you are using including any programs that are ‘hung’ or ‘not responding’ Turns the computer off …HOW do you do this?

Shut Down – Windows 10 Click on Choose Read the message – all programs will be closed, then Windows will be closed down and then your computer will be turned off. Power will be turned off and your computer will shut down

Shut Down – Windows 7 Click on the button Choose Read the message – all programs will be closed, then Windows will be closed down and then your computer will be turned off. Power will be turned off and your computer will shut down

Shut Down – Windows XP Click on the button Choose Click this down arrow and choose option required turn off the On/Off switch IF PROMPTED TO!!!!
