Anderson Diagnostics New Born Hearing Screening

About Hearing Screening Deaf people can do anything, except hear. A new born baby may suffer with a low profile disability, that is hearing loss. This issue In infant cannot be identified not before 2 or more months. A late detection can affect child’s early development of speech and language. Thus an infant should be identified with the hearing loss as soon as possible, so that if a defect is found can be treated early. Many new born hearing screening techniques are available for the diagnosis of the same. Anderson Diagnostics has now started newborn hearing screening lab in Chennai. newborn hearing screening lab in Chennai.

Statistics on Hearing loss in Infants Congenital Hearing Loss (Hearing loss by birth), has high incidence affecting 30 per 10,000 children. 24% to 46% of newborns admitted to NICU are open to significant hearing loss.

Reasons for Hearing Loss in Infants Genes – Family History Of Hearing Loss Most of the infants have hearing loss due to their family history of hearing loss. Early identification of this helps in treating the infant early. Low Birth Weight Low birth weight is another reason for hearing loss in infants. This may be due to bad mother’s health.

Reasons for Hearing Loss in Infants CMV Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common virus that can infect almost anyone. A woman who develops an active CMV infection during pregnancy can pass the virus to her baby, who may have the risk of hearing loss. Gestational Diabetes Gestational diabetes is a condition in which a woman without diabetes, develop high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. Babies born to mothers with poorly treated gestational diabetes are at increased risk of being too large, having low blood sugar, hearing loss and jaundice.

Facts On Hearing Screening Preferable screening in new born is between hrs of life. Identification and Intervention of hearing impairment should be done before 6 months of child’s life. If you didn’t get proper results in the first test, Rescreening can be done within 6 weeks of time. Both the ears should be screened and a maximum of 2 attempts should be done to ensure child’s hearing ability.

Hearing Screening using OAE OAE is Otoacoustic Emissions Test, where a miniature earphone and microphone are placed in the ear, sounds are played and a response is measured. This is such a simple and safe test and can be carried out even when the baby sleeps. If a baby hears normally, an echo is reflected back into the ear canal and is measured by the microphone. When a baby has a hearing loss, no echo or a reduced echo can be measured on the OAE test.
