Ohne Titel (The Red Sun), Artist:Joan Miro , 1948, Oil and gouache on canvas, 36 1/8 x 28 1/8 in. ABSTRACT ART

Some abstract artists felt that paintings did not have to show only things that were recognizable. In their paintings they did not try to show people, animals, or places exactly as they appeared in the real world. They mainly used color and shape in their paintings to show emotions. Some Abstract art is called Non-objective art. In non-objective art, you do not see specific objects. It is not painted to look like something specific. Composition No. 10. 1939-42. Piet Mondrian. Oil on canvas. 80 x 73 cm. Private collection.

Non-objective abstract art uses a visual language of form, color, line, texture, value, shape, and space to create a composition which exists independently of visual references to the world. Kandinsky's On White II (1923). Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.

The subject becomes the elements of art. Non-objective abstract artists create compositions using just the elements of art to express emotion instead of known objects. The subject becomes the elements of art. Willem de Kooning (American, 1904-1997) Gotham News, 1955 Oil on canvas, 69 x 79“

Abstract art uses a visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world that communicates an idea or emotion.

Non-objective Expressionism (Non-Representational) uses a visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition independent from visual references in the world that communicates an idea or emotion.

Wasilly Kandinsky, Composition VIII

Composition VIII by Wassily Kandinsky is small oil on canvas painting dating from 1923 that is currently in the Guggenheim Museum in New York. As the name implies, it is the eighth in a series of paintings, begun in 1911, in which the artist expresses what he is trying to achieve. Kandinsky wanted to explore the medium of painting rather than be concerned with subject matter. His goal was to paint what music sounds like. Composition VIII can accurately be described as a geometric composition. The viewer is immediately struck by the large concentric circles at the top left of the picture. The two inner circles are perfect circles, while the outer has a fuzzy outline. The rest of the painting is comprised of other circles, semi-circles, triangles, squares, parallelograms and other shapes. Coloring throughout the painting is subtle, except for the striking black and purple of the top left circle.
