Introduction to Animal Science

What is Animal Science?

Animal Science is….. Historically, it was the study of farm animals Today it is defined as the study of all domesticated animals including livestock, poultry, companion animals and captive animals.

What are some uses or roles of animals in our society?

Types of animals included Livestock Exotic The most important industry within animal science Involves the science and business of producing processing and marketing meat, dairy, eggs and animal by-products Large animals used for pleasure such as horses are included Non traditional poultry and animals used for the production of food and fiber Include: bison, llama, ostrich, quail, alpaca, etc. Small part of the industry

Cats, dogs and other animals used for pleasure and entertainment companion Captive Cats, dogs and other animals used for pleasure and entertainment Includes reptiles, birds and amphibians Non-domestic animals kept in zoos and parks Tiger, deer, raccoon, etc.

Statistics statistics Products Up to 18% of US jobs are in agriculture and many of those are directly related to Animal Science Top livestock sales Cattle, poultry, milk, hogs, horses, aquaculture, others, sheep and goats Equipment, supplies, feed, tools, feed additives, biological products and pharmaceuticals.
