FACTS ABOUT THE BLACK DEATH By lily

1A plague epidemic swept through Europe from 1348 through 1351, killing an estimated 25–60% of Europeans. Some estimates are as high as 2/3 of the population.

■2The exact death toll from the Black Death is difficult to measure from medieval sources. The number of deaths varied considerably by area and depending on the source. Current estimates are that between 75 and 200 million people died from the plague

■3The term "Black Death" is recent. During the plague, it was called "the Great Mortality" or "the Pestilence."

cures In the outbreak, doctors were completely unable to prevent or cure the plague. Some of the cures they tried included:  cooked onionsn-year-old treacle  arsenic  crushed emeralds  sitting in the sewers  sitting in a room between two enormous fires  fumigating your house with herbs  to try to stop what they believed was God punishing them for their sin, 'flagellants' went on processions whipping themselves  in the outbreak, doctors learned how to help the patient recover by bursting the buboes
