When is harvest celebrated? Fruits, vegetables and other food plants need time to grow. When the fruits are ready to eat they are harvested. The plants start to grow in spring, when the weather is a little warmer. In summer the plants grow bigger and the fruits ripen. A farmer sows corn seeds. In spring they start to grow. When the seeds first grow they are green, as the sun had not yet ripened them. When the corn turns golden, it is ready to be harvested. Harvest festivals are usually held in Autumn, in September or October.

Harvesting Do you know what food is being harvested in these pictures? How do we ‘harvest’ apples? How do we ‘harvest’ corn? pick cut What do we use apples for? What can we use corn for? Harvesting means collecting the food that has grown. Do you know what food is being harvested in these pictures? How are they harvested? tea fish coffee Catching fish is sometimes called ‘harvesting the sea.’ How do you think farmers feel during harvest?

Why is harvest celebrated? Harvest is celebrated to give thanks for the crops which have been safely gathered in. Christians say ‘thank you’ to God for the food during harvest. Christians believe that God made the world and everything in it. Christians thank God for all the varieties of food and everything that helps the food to grow.
