Do Now Define Mass What units do we use to describe mass? What tool do we use to measure mass? What steps do we take to use that tool?
Measuring Volume
What is Volume? Volume is the amount of space that an object takes up. All solids and liquids have a measurable volume. Why not a gas????
So how do we measure Volume?? There are three different ways. Using a graduated cylinder. Using a ruler. Using water displacement.
Measuring the Volume of a Liquid Use a Graduated Cylinder. This is the most accurate instrument we will use to measure the volume of a liquid. In most cases, we will be reading our volumes in mL.
Reading the Meniscus The volume of a liquid in a graduated cylinder is read by looking at the lowest point of the meniscus. The Meniscus is the curve that forms at the water level of a graduated cylinder. You must be at eyelevel to properly read the meniscus.
Try These!!!
Measuring the Volume of a solid Two types of solids, Regular and Irregular. Regular solids are objects with flat even sides that are easy to measure Regular solids have formulas for calculating their volume. V=Length x Width x Height. We can measure all of these with a ruler!!!
Example Ex. This box has a length of 5 cm, a width of 8 cm. and a height of 6 cm. V= l x w x h V= 5 cm. x 8 cm. x 6 cm. V= 240.0 (cm. x cm. x cm.) V= 240 cm3.
So what about Irregular solids??? An irregular solid has an irregular shape and therefore does not have flat even sides. How would we measure the volume of a rock? Or a certain amount of sand??? We can’t use a ruler, so we have to use a technique called WATER DISPLACEMENT.
