What is MUN? Part 1 Model United Nations is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. In Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states and debate current issues and problems that affect countries all over the world.

What is MUN? Part 2 MUN involves young people in discussions on global issues, but more importantly, develops skills useful throughout their lives and careers, such as writing, public speaking, problem solving, consequences building, conflict resolution, negotiation and cooperation.

What do I need to join the MUN Team? Don’t worry. No previous skills are required. Be open and willing to learn about other cultures. We will train you in the way MUN works. We will teach you how to: research countries, write position papers, give speeches with confidence, convince others that what you say matters, be a member of a team and how socialize confidently and successfully.

Top 3 Reasons to Join MUN: REASON 1 It’s a fun way of learning about the world. In this era of globalization, being globally aware is more important than ever. Also, having fun makes it easier to learn something and more likely to stick.

Top 3 Reasons to Join MUN: REASON 2 It develops leadership skills. MUN is an exercise in research, public speaking, and teamwork. These are skills that you will need throughout your career, and MUN gives you a chance to practice them while you’re a student.

Top 3 Reasons to Join MUN: REASON 3 You can leverage your MUN experience and network to get into college and find jobs. Admissions officers and job interviewers look for examples of leadership, and your experiences as a delegate or conference organizer will be good examples. You will also develop a network of alumni from your MUN club and people you’ve met at conferences.

Preparing for Conferences Our regular Friday meeting days are 25 minutes. It is critical you arrive on time and prepared to engage in MUN activities. We will need to vote on another time to meet weekly. Possibly Tuesdays during advisory. We will also have to meet after school sometimes – for about an hour -- to practice as a team for conferences.

Our next meeting and Agenda Friday, October 14, during advisory. Go to the website and complete Member Form 1. Turn it in BEFORE the next meeting: by 11 October. 1-Minute Officer speeches. (Students interested in being MUN officer leaders need to see me by 4 October.) Propose other conferences and the top 3 countries we would want to represent at THIMUN in January 2012.
