From Bill to Law “No Children Under the Age of Six Should Hold Babies”

The Louisiana State Constitution divides the state government into three parts: 1. The Legislative Branch – which makes laws *House of Representatives *Senate 2. The Executive Branch – which carries out laws *The Governor 3. The Judicial Branch – which decides if laws are fair and whether they have been broken *The State Supreme Court (Judges)

1. I came up with an idea for a new law 1. I came up with an idea for a new law. The idea is, “No children under the age of six should hold babies.” 2. My reason for this bill is children under six years old might end up dropping the baby. If they drop the baby it could get hurt really bad or die.

3. I took my idea to Senator Sharon Weston Broome (The Legislative Branch of Louisiana State Government). She looked at the idea and liked it. 4. Senator Broome shared the bill with the Senate President.

5. The Senate President took the bill to the Senate committee 5. The Senate President took the bill to the Senate committee. The committee discussed and debated the bill. They agreed that it should become a law. The committee went over the bill and made a few changes.

6. Next the Senate committee reported the edited bill to the members of the House of Representatives. They read the bill. Then they reviewed the bill again and debated it. After the Representatives reviewed the bill a third time they voted on the bill.

7. The Senate and the House of Representatives voted YES on the bill.

8. Next the bill was sent to Governor Bobby Jindal (the Executive Branch of Louisiana State Government). Governor Jindal read the bill to decide if the bill should become a law or should not become a law. Governor Jindal decided that he would sign the bill and it would become a law. He could have vetoed or refused to sign the bill and then it may have gone back to the legislative branch. Governor Jindal will make sure that people follow the law.

9. The Judicial Branch of Louisiana State Government is lead by the Louisiana Supreme Court. The court includes judges who decide what is right when there are disagreements about the law. If someone thinks that children under the age of six SHOULD hold babies, the Supreme Court has the power to decide whether the law is fair. After discussion and debate the judges decide if the law should stay in place.
