Moralzarzal, Spain

City, Town or Village? Moralzarzal is a village located in the Sierra Guadarrama in the province of Madrid. The village has a population of approximately 12,000 people

The History of “Moral” Moralzarzal was founded in the XIV century after the Reconquest of Spain when two villages :Moral de la Fuente and Zarzal joined The name “Moralzarzal” is a combination of the names of these two villages The history of these two villages is represented in Moralzarzal´s coat of arms- the fountain of Moral in the lower half and a blackberry bush for Zarza in the upper half

Local Festivities In Moral there are many local festivities One of the town´s most popular festivities is the Matanza which takes place in late January or Early February.

La Matanza La Matanza is the traditional celebration of the shepherds and cattemen who originally founded Moralzarzal. People cook food and make sausage in the village´s main plaza. Everyone shares the food they cook! This is a great Festival for people Who love to eat!!

Other Celebrations: La Luminmaria: This festival celebrates Saint Sebastian and takes place in January. We enjoy ¨chocolate con churros” (Hot cocoa and a type of fried bread) while we keep warm by the bonfire.

Other Activities in Moral Bullfights! We have bull fighting ring with weekly bullfights (They are always on Sundays) It holds 6.000 people, which is almost half of the town!

Hiking in the Mountains! The “Maliciosa” is the tallest Mountain in the Guadarrama Mountain Range (2.227 meters above sea level)
