Influencing Positive Social Relations for Youth Sub-Module 3 28 Nov 12

What is Conflict? Definition: When two or more people disagree or have different ideas on what they are to do. This can result in stress and/or tension.

Types of Conflict Interpersonal – breakdown in communication between two or more people Structural – due to problems with the organization or how personnel are used in the organization Facts/data – when one party has more information than another or the information is interpreted in a different way

Definitions Constructive conflict – behaviours that help build relationships, manage emotions, or accept and resolve conflict Destructive conflict – tries to win no matter what, lacks respect for others, avoids conflict, and negatively expresses emotions Escalate – to increase or intensify De-escalate – to decrease and make less intense Position – what you want (the ideal solution for one person) Interest – why you want it (underlying reasons and unmet needs)

Reflection Wheel

Four Approaches to Managing Conflict Power based Interest based Rights based Avoidance

Using Self-Help Reflect on the issue/concern Raise the issue or concern in respectful manner and allow the other person to do the same Allow the other person to clarify the issues or concerns to gain a better understanding of each other Allow the other person to identify concerns and come up with a mutually agreeable solution If the behaviour does not stop or the other person does not want to use self-help, bring with the issue with the UCCMA or immediate supervisor

Available Resources Senior cadet or staff cadet Trusted adult UCCMA Officer/CI Teacher Parent UCCMA The CO Kids Help Phone: 1-888-668-6868

Roles and Responsibilities in Dealing With Conflict Resolve conflicts at the lowest level possible Try interest based method first Seek assistance through the chain of command Seek further assistance if the result is not satisfactory Undertake cadet training in managing conflict Promote interest based approach (ADR) as a conflict management method

Conflict Management Approaches Competing Collaborating Issue Importance Compromising Avoidance Accommodating Relationship Importance

Steps in Identifying & Managing Conflict 1. Problem/issue – What is the problem? 2. Needs – What matters and why is there a problem? 3. Options – How can we resolve this? 4. Solution – Which are the best choices to create the needed changes?

Things to Consider What is the type of conflict? Determine the scope of the situation: - Is it a single event or part of an ongoing conflict? - Are others impacted by this conflict? - Is the behavior unwelcome or offensive? - Do others need to be involved in the resolution? - Does the conflict impact the workplace? - Might this conflict be criminal? (if so, advise chain of command Self-reflect: Am I the right person to manage this situation?

Goals of the Collaborative Approach Improving or repairing relationships by increasing understanding and decreasing tension between people Developing solutions to issues that result in gains for each person Provide people with the positive experience of conflict resolution

Interests that Affect a Conflict: PEACHBFVs Priorities Expectations Assumptions Concerns Hopes Beliefs Fears Values
