Smoking Kills!!! Warning!! Warning!!

Opinion Using tobacco is worse than drinking alcohol. Smokeless tobacco is safer than cigarettes or cigars Tobacco should be completely illegal The tobacco age should be raised to 21 Athletes/celebrities should not be allowed to advertise tobacco products.

What is in Tobacco? Natural tobacco contains harmful substances that are released when a person smokes or chews it. Tobacco companies add more harmful ingredients when they prepare tobacco to be sold. Deciding not to take poisons into your body is a healthful decision.

What’s in a Cigarette?

More ingredients Cyanide- deadly poison; ingredient in pest control Formaldehyde- burning, stinging gas that is used as a preservative in the laboratory and also causes nasal cancer

INFORMATION Tobacco products are made from the dried, processed leaves of tobacco plants. NICOTINE-is a chemical that acts as an insecticide to protect the plants’ leaves from insects. It is VERY addictive. TAR-the dark, sticky substance that forms when tobacco burns. It is a mixture of hundreds of chemicals known as CARCINOGENS (cancer-causing agents). CARBON MONOXIDE-an odorless, poisonous gas produced when tobacco is burned. Replaces oxygen in red blood cells.

Forms of Tobacco Tobacco is a leaf that comes from tobacco plants The leaves are dried and then prepared for people to smoke or chew them The most common ones are cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, smokeless tobacco, clove cigarettes, and flavored tobacco.

Cigarettes Contain shredded tobacco leaves Tobacco companies claim that filters block some of the harmful chemicals found in cigarettes, however, filters do not remove enough chemicals to make cigarettes less dangerous THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A SAFE CIGARETTE!! Flavored cigarettes may taste and smell sweet, however, they have even more chemicals than regular cigarettes Clove cigarettes- ground spices and tobacco Hookahs- smoke flavored tobacco place in water pipes

Cigars and Pipes Contain shredded tobacco leaves Cigar smoke contains up to 90x more of the cancer-causing chemicals found in cigarette smoke More likely to develop mouth, tongue, or lip cancer than people who don’t smoke.

Smoker’s Mouth!!

Mouth Cancer!!!

Smokeless Tobacco Two forms- chewing tobacco and snuff Chewing Tobacco aka “dip” or “spit tobacco” Snuff can be sniffed or chewed Held in the mouth rather than inhaled as smoke Nicotine is absorbed into tissues and the bloodstream through the digestive tract Just as harmful and addictive as cigarettes.

Smokeless Tobacco Kills Too!

One Year’s Worth of Tar!!

Respiratory System Digestive System Nervous System Excretory System Circulatory System Tobacco smoke damages the air sacs in the lungs. This damage can lead to a life-threatening disease that destroys the air sacs. Smokers are also between 12-22 times more likely than non smokers to develop lung cancer All forms of tobacco increase the risks of cavities and gum disease. Tobacco dulls the taste buds and can cause stomach ulcers. Tobacco use is linked to cancers of the mouth, throat, stomach, esophagus, and pancreas Tobacco use reduces the flow of oxygen to the brain which can lead to a stroke Smokers have at least twice the risk of developing bladder cancer as nonsmokers. Smokeless tobacco can also put users at risk of developing bladder cancer Tobacco use is linked to heart disease. It increases the chances of a heart attack. Smoking also raises blood pressure and heart rate.

LONG-TERM EFFECTS Chronic bronchitis-the airways are constantly inflamed. Leads to increased mucus and difficulty breathing. Emphysema-when the alveoli (air-sacs) in the lungs are damaged and cannot function properly. Less oxygen = always being short of breath. Cancer-Leading cause of cancer deaths! Only 15% of patients will survive more than 5 years. By the time it is diagnosed, treatment is unlikely.

Respiratory System Breathing in tobacco smoke affects your respiratory system. Smoke damages the alveoli- tiny air sacs in the lungs Your lungs are less able to supply oxygen to the body

Digestive System Lead to mouth and stomach ulcers Harms teeth and gums, causing teeth to yellow and making it more likely that you will get cavities and gum disease

Nervous System Your brain needs oxygen Tobacco smoke contains carbon monoxide which can cut down the amount of oxygen that the blood can carry to the brain. Nicotines reaches the brain in only a few seconds and attaches to special receptors in brain cells The brain adapts to nicotine by increasing the number of nicotine receptors, causing addiction

Circulatory System Includes heart and blood vessels As a person smokes blood vessels constrict or squeeze together. The blood vessels harden over time This disables the blood vessels to send enough blood and oxygen throughout the body. Increases chances of heart attack and stroke Raises blood pressure and heart rate

Excretory System More likely to develop bladder cancer than non-smokers. Chemicals are absorbed from the lungs and get into the blood. Blood then sends the chemicals to the kidneys and bladder Chemicals damage the cells that line the inside of the bladder and increase risk of cancer Colorectal Cancer- affects the colon and rectum

Center for Disease Control Says, “5 million persons who were aged 0-17 years in 2007 will die prematurely from a smoking-related illness.” This means that smoking will shorten half the lives in this room!!!!

It’s Your Choice… or

Addiction Psychological dependence – Habit, associated with social situations, think you need it. Physical (withdrawal)- Headaches, irritability, difficulty sleeping, loss of concentration, cravings, shaking, etc. (30 minutes)

SECOND-HAND SMOKE When you inhale sidestream smoke (directly burns from cigarette) or mainstream smoked (exhaled smoke) from a smoker. Just as dangerous as smoking!
