CFI John R Evans Leaders Fund Digital Data Management

Who Should Be Concerned About This? ALL CFI APPLICANTS Although data management planning is not required by the CFI, recent CFI and Tri-Agency Statements indicate that this will be something that the CFI will expect applicants to consider during proposal development

CFI Report and Tri-Agency Statement on Digital Data Management The CFI released the report Developing a Digital Research Infrastructure Strategy for Canada in 2015 The Tri-Agency released the Statement of Principles on Digital Data Management in 2016 The CFI report and Tri-Agency Statement align with other national endeavours, relating to data management including the Government of Canada’s Action Plan on Open Government (2014) CFI and Tri-Agency expectations: Researchers should follow data management planning standards for collection and storage of digital data, metadata, and the preservation, retention and sharing of data and metadata All stakeholders (researchers, research communities, research institutions and research funders) are responsible for ensuring these expectations are met

What is a Data Management Plan? A formal document Describes how data will be managed both during and after the active phases of a research project Goal of a data management plan is to consider the many aspects of data management before a research project begins

General Components of a Data Management Plan Data Collection What type of data will be collected? Interim file storage and transfer procedures Data organization (file naming and versioning) Data Sharing and Reuse Will data be shared and, if so, in what form? How will data be shared? Are restrictions required on data access, or will it be open access? Documentation Study and data level documentation Metadata standards Storage and Backup How will data be stored/backed up? Security considerations for sensitive data Preservation Will data be preserved or destroyed? Where will data be preserved? Data cleaning, normalization and de-identification processes Responsibilities and Resources Who is responsible for data management during the project? What happens when personnel changes occur, or if PI leaves institution before the project concludes? Who is responsible for data sharing and preservation after the project concludes?

Data Management Planning Resources Portage Network https://portagenetwork.ca/ National research data management (RDM) network Launched by the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) in 2015 Provides: Network of Expertise Access to a network of resources, tools and experts for RDM DMP Assistant A gold standard platform for developing data management plans

Data Management Planning Resources Portage Network – DMP Assistant https://assistant.portagenetwork.ca/ Web-based, bilingual tool Walks users step-by-step through key research data management questions Provides guidance and examples Produces living data management planning documents that can be revisited during active research Can store multiple data management plans Provides for shared access to data management plans

Data Management Planning Resources Dataverse https://dataverse.library.ualberta.ca/dvn/ Open source software Means of sharing data Researchers have full control over who will have access to the data Can provide open access to data, or restrict access Generates a data citation for each study housed within it Creates DOIs for data files Unbreakable permanent link to data Enables research studies to be described using international (DDI) metadata standard

Data Management Planning Resources Education and Research Archive https://era.library.ualberta.ca/ Open access platform for accessing intellectual output of the University of Alberta Theses Reports Published journal articles Books and book chapters Research datasets etc. Easy and convenient solution
