Lesson 36: Let’s Go to Jesus Nothing Better Lesson 36: Let’s Go to Jesus

INTRODUCTION: In this section of Hebrews 13, the preacher is going to explain how who Jesus is and what He has done relate to how we live the Christian life.

Hebrews 13:8-14 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. 9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.

Hebrews 13:8-14 10 We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle. 11 For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. 12 Wherefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered without the gate. 13 Let us go forth therefore unto Him without the camp, bearing His reproach. 14 For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

JESUS IS RELIABLE BECAUSE HE IS UNCHANGEABLE (Heb. 13:8) 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

JESUS IS RELIABLE BECAUSE HE IS UNCHANGEABLE (Heb. 13:8) 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. If we are honest with ourselves, we must admit that even though Jesus’ love for us does not wax or wane, sometimes our love for Him waxes and wanes over the period of our Christian lives.

JESUS IS RELIABLE BECAUSE HE IS UNCHANGEABLE (Heb. 13:8) 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. If you are feeling further away from Jesus than you want to be, then go to Jesus and keep on going to Him until you know that He is your hope, He’s bigger than any problem you’re facing, and He’s better than any desire that you have.

JESUS ALONE IS ALL WE NEED TO LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE (Heb. 13:9) 9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.

What we need is what only Jesus can supply, and that is grace.

What we need is what only Jesus can supply, and that is grace. We need grace to be saved; we need grace to be sanctified; and we need grace to persevere.

JESUS ALONE IS ALL WE NEED TO LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE (1 Tim. 1:3-5) 3 … thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. 5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: False doctrine cannot lead you to maturity in the Christian life; only the truth and grace of Christ can do that.

JESUS ALONE IS ALL WE NEED TO LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE (Heb. 13:9) 9 … not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. Under the Old Covenant, eating or not eating certain foods was a part of a person’s sanctification.

God kept His people from being able to eat with idolaters by prescribing them a different diet.

JESUS MAKES ATONEMENT FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:10-11) 10 We have an altar from which those who minister at the tabernacle have no right to eat.

JESUS MAKES ATONEMENT FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:10-11) 10 We have an altar from which those who minister at the tabernacle have no right to eat. In the O.T., one of the ways that the priests were paid was through the animal sacrifices brought by the people.

JESUS MAKES ATONEMENT FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:10-11) 10 We have an altar from which those who minister at the tabernacle have no right to eat. The preacher makes the contrast that we are a kingdom of priests and we have our own altar from which we take our spiritual food.

JESUS MAKES ATONEMENT FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:10-11; Lev. 16:22-28) 11 For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. While the priests received a portion of most every sacrifice, they were forbidden to eat any of the sacrifice on the Day of Atonement.

JESUS MAKES ATONEMENT FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:10-11) The Scapegoat – illustrated that the sins of God’s people were being transferred to that goat which was sent into the wilderness removing the sins of the people far from the camp.

JESUS MAKES ATONEMENT FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:10-11) The Sacrifice of Atonement – illustrated how God dealt with His people’s sins by meting our the punishment deserved (death) of the animal. The blood was the only part of the sacrifice used in the atonement ritual. The rest of the animal’s carcass was taken outside the camp and burned to ashes.

JESUS EXPERIENCED THE ULTIMATE SEPARATION FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:12) 12 Wherefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered without the gate.

JESUS EXPERIENCED THE ULTIMATE SEPARATION FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:12) 12 Wherefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered without the gate. Jesus was both the scapegoat and the atoning sacrifice, who was killed outside the gates.

JESUS EXPERIENCED THE ULTIMATE SEPARATION FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:12) “Outside the camp” – normally applied to three things:

JESUS EXPERIENCED THE ULTIMATE SEPARATION FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:12) “Outside the camp” – normally applied to three things: Someone who was unclean or defiled was sent outside the camp.

JESUS EXPERIENCED THE ULTIMATE SEPARATION FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:12) “Outside the camp” – normally applied to three things: Someone who had sinned against the Lord was punished outside the camp.

JESUS EXPERIENCED THE ULTIMATE SEPARATION FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:12) “Outside the camp” – normally applied to three things: The carcasses of the sacrifice of atonement were burned outside the camp.

JESUS EXPERIENCED THE ULTIMATE SEPARATION FOR HIS PEOPLE (Heb. 13:12) “Outside the camp” – normally applied to three things: It’s the picture of separation from God and His people.

GO TO JESUS (Heb. 13:13-14) 13 Let us go forth therefore unto Him without the camp, bearing His reproach. 14 For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

GO TO JESUS (Heb. 13:13-14) 13 Let us go forth therefore unto Him without the camp, bearing His reproach. 14 For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. When you think that there’s something out there better than Jesus or bigger than Him, it’s called worldliness.

GO TO JESUS (Heb. 13:13-14) 13 Let us go forth therefore unto Him without the camp, bearing His reproach. 14 For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. Since Jesus bore our reproach, we should be willing, in gratitude for His grace, to bear a little of His reproach.
