Ballast Water Treatment (D-2) Many ballast water treatment systems use a combination of treatment options. Primary treatment often uses physical methods such as filtration and hydro cyclons. Secondary treatment: Mechanical methods: ultraviolet radiation (UV), thermal, ultrasound, magnetic, electrical treatment Chemical methods: use of biocides, chlorine, ozone, hydrogen peroxide, chorine dioxide etc. (‘active substances’) Photo credits: unknown

Remaining issues Availability of systems suitable for ships with ballast water capacity larger than 5.000 m3 Role of ports?
