Presentation transcript:

Walk-In Take out notebook, pencil box and folder. Copy the question and answer in sentences: What similarities in geography do you find between the Indus Valley and Sumer? What differences exist?

Answer Both civilizations had rivers, like the Indus River in India, and the Tigris-Euphrates Rivers in Mesopotamia. The Indus River had mountains to the north, but Mesopotamia was mostly a flat, semiarid area.

Walk-In Take out notebook, folder, pencil box. B’s, please get the textbooks. Copy the question and answer in sentences: State two pros and two cons of the Indus River Valley having the Hindu Kush mountains around it.

Answer Two pros of the Hindu Kush mountains: Blocked out cold winds in the winter. Made it difficult for invaders to come in and conquer. Two cons: Isolated the Indus Valley, so it was more difficult to trade goods, ideas and new technology. Made it harder to travel and expand their civilization.

Take out notebook, folder, pencil box and agenda. Walk-In Take out notebook, folder, pencil box and agenda. Copy this week’s agenda.

Walk-In No textbooks today! Take out notebook, folder, pencil box. What can we infer about Harappan Civilizations from their city streets being built in large, square grids?

Answer – Heading: Harappan Cities The Harappans had PLANNED cities that featured: Heavy city walls to protect the city inside. Streets that formed a neat grid with square corners, keeping the city well organized. Large buildings for religious and government use, and houses, shops and factories within each square of the grid.

Harappan Civilizations

Two Civilizations On The Indus River Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa were the two civilizations that started in India, around 2500 BC.

Reading for Information Read pages 221-224 of textbook. Answer the question on your small sheet of paper in COMPLETE SENTENCES!

Harappan Civilization Harappan Civilizations formed in the Indus River Valley, before 2500 BC. They had neatly built cities, with modern drainage to get rid of “human wastes”. We infer they had strong leaders and government because they were so advanced.

Harappans used 500 or more pictographs for writing (but we don’t have a key to understand what they wrote). They used a system of weights and measures when doing trading and business. See study guide for more achievements.
