Choosing a Major: Support Network Many people and departments support students with different aspects of the major and career decision-making process, including professors, staff, and even fellow students. Academic Advisors provide one-on-one advising on major and course selection, study abroad, health professions advising, disabilities support, and more. Undergraduate Advising Heads (UAHs) are faculty advisors within various academic departments that can help you explore majors and minors. Undergraduate Departmental Representatives (UDRs) are students within various academic departments that can help you learn more about majors/minors of interest. International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) assists international students with your adjustment to Brandeis and offers advice and counsel on financial, academic and personal issues. Library & Technology Services (LTS) offers resources beyond academic research and computer help. They provide workshops, tutorials, and other tools to help with major and career research. Hiatt offers career services for life! Hiatt’s Philosophy and Approach Hiatt helps Brandeisians identify who they are, what they want, & how to get there. We assist students and alumni in developing the skills to transform their unique backgrounds, liberal arts education and experiential learning into meaningful professional futures and relationships. Hiatt engages employers, colleagues, parents/families, and the greater Brandeis community to achieve this mission. Hiatt offers career services for life!

Starting with the Individual Everything starts with reflection; the first step is to explore self. Resources: An appointment with one of our staff to discuss values, skills, interests and motivations, explore majors, and identify future options. TypeFocus, an online tool to gain insights about your personality and interests and apply them to major and career decisions, followed by an appointment with a career counselor Opportunities to explore and hone interests : student clubs and organizations, wide array of classes, and volunteerism Who you are and identifying your values, skills, interests and motivations.

Career Education & Exploration Learn by Example (and filter by major) Brandeis Internship Exchange (BIX) — Read internship reviews written by Brandeis students. Beyond Brandeis — Browse first destinations of Brandeis graduates within six months of graduation. LinkedIn — Look at the profiles of Brandeis alumni and students to see sample career paths that match interests. Networking — Industry Nights, alumni/student networking events, Wisdom Wanted Conduct Industry Research Occupational Outlook Handbook provides information on responsibilities, education, pay and outlook for hundreds of occupations. O*NET has detailed descriptions, responsibilities, required skills, preferred interests, and general work styles and environments for a variety of professions. Spotlight on Careers offers field-specific overviews, job and internship resources, and resume and interview tips - from the arts to science to business. Vault has wide and deep resources for exploring career fields, especially in the for-profit sector. When exploring areas of interest, look for opportunities to learn more. If you already have an idea of what you're interested in, you might need help narrowing down your options. When exploring careers, it's important to develop plans while staying open to new opportunities. Talk to people who know who know about majors and fields of interest. Friends, family, professors, and advisors can all give you great information about majors and fields to help inform your decision making. Poll #2 – how closely does your career align with your field of study?
