The Great Debate Nature vs Nurture

The Debate Examines the influences of genetics and heredity (nature) as well as the impact of environment (nurture) on the development of individual people

Nature or Nurture? Two factors were previously thought to be separate Now, researchers are focusing on how each one jointly impacts growth and development

Heredity and Genetics Passed onto offspring by parents Impact a person's behaviour patterns Think about the ways in which you are similar to your parents?

Nurture - Environment Consists mainly of the people around us What other factors could be considered “nurture”? Parental influence is a major contributor to the nurture aspect of the debate and is seen as a central influence on a child's development and behaviour

We are still curious about the level of impact for each one  Conclusion A person’s behaviour develops from a combination of both nature and nurture. We are still curious about the level of impact for each one 

Twins When identical twins are brought up apart from one another, they are more similar to each other than two random people might be -- that's because they share genes but not environment. If those same twins are brought up in the same home with the same parents, they are more alike than are fraternal twins brought up together.

Feral Children What can cases of children raised without nurturing tell us about the effects of nature and nurture? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYQtbZb e8kE

Feral Children Everything we know about being human, we learn from the people around us The brain develops differently when children are not nurtured (smaller, more dark spaces) Development is extremely delayed in all areas when children are isolated Genetics gives us a brain but children need to be nurtured in order to learn and develop
