TAPAS in the EGI “ecosystem” Gergely Sipos sipos@sztaki.hu EGEE Application Porting Support EGEE Training and induction MTA SZTAKI Grid Application Support Centre www.lpds.sztaki.hu/gasuc

Role of TAPAS in EGI ecosystem Actively searching for new user communities Understanding the e-infrastructural needs of emerging and existing scientific communities Interviews Enabling emerging and existing EGI users to do e-Science quicker, better, simpler TAPAS users Grid application developers (IT members of scientific communities) Scientists (end users - need transparent grid access)

TAPAS partners Name Short Name Country Hungarian Academy of Sciences Computer and Automation Research Institute (coordinator) MTA SZTAKI HU ISTITUTO NAZIONALE DI FISICA NUCLEARE INFN IT Greek Research Network GRNET GR University of Westminster UniWest UK University of Warsaw UniWars PL National Information Infrastructure Development Institute NIIFI Helsinki Institute of Physics HIP FI

TAPAS activities for users Actively searching for and interviewing emerging communities and new members of established communities in order to offer e-Infrastructure consultancy and application porting support services Providing technical application porting service for existing and new users of EGI Identification of those generic application use cases where the EGI grid can be used efficiently at a production scale and produce “off the shelf” solutions for these cases Lower grid usage barriers by further developing some of the generic porting tools

TAPAS Work Packages NA1 Project administrative and technical management MGT NA2 Knowledge Services (user community identification, interviewing; dissemination and training) COORD SA1 Porting applications SVC SA2 Infrastructure services for application developers SA3 Use cases and consultancy for new communities JRA1 Further development of porting tools RTD

TAPAS WP “workflow” NA2 SA1 SA3 JRA1 SA2 End users Demand for application porting Ported applications SA3 E-Infrastructure usage example Generic e-Infrastructure use case Application developers NGIs, SSCs, new communities… NA2 Training and dissemination material SA2 Porting infrastructure services JRA1 Updated porting tools Requirements for porting tools Identify and interview Consultancy on e-Infrastructure usage

Interfaces with EGI.org EGI.org unit Group within unit TAPAS WP topic Operations and security Allocation of user support tickets SA1 Handling application porting request tickets SA2 Handling porting infrastructure tickets User community services Coordination of SSC activities NA2 Organize the representatives of user communities JRA1 Organize the needs of user communities Service for new and small communities SA3 Analysing new trends in topology of grid users and resources Event organization NA1, NA2 Contribution to User Forum event, co-allocation of TAPAS workshop/meeting Coord. of tech. info. and documentation Possibility of joint/unified documentation server, document format and document editing tool Coordination of training efforts Dissemination, training on TAPAS results.

Interfaces with Scientific SSCs In some cases the technical application porting services of TAPAS will not cover every stage of a porting project and grid specialists from the Scientific SSCs must be involved. TAPAS will contact the application support representative of the Scientific SSC and either involves Scientific SSC members in the porting, or delegates the complete porting project to the Scientific SSC TAPAS porting support persons will use the resources of scientific VOs whenever the profile of an application allows this TAPAS expects that the managers of scientific VOs will allow membership for the porting experts in such cases TAPAS will provide generic porting services for Scientific SSC members if this improves the overall efficiency of the porting Case by case decision Who will serve the porting needs of new SSCs, such as photonic science, humanities,…?

Interfaces with “horizontal” proposals CUE: TAPAS to forward training requests to CUE Collaborate on delivery of training events Common partners: SZTAKI, INFN Catania, GRNET, UWars, UoWestminster EMI: Forward middleware development requests on behalf of clients of TAPAS porting services Common partners: GRNET, UWars, NIIF EGI-SGI: TAPAS to use portlet repository for porting projects TAPAS and EGI-SGI should carry out interviews together? Common partners: SZTAKI, UoWestminster GridTalk-2: Channels for TAPAS dissemination
