Mammals

What is a mammal? All mammals, from bats to whales, share a number of important characteristics that make them different from other creatures.

How are mammals born? Almost all mammals are born from their mothers. Female mammals are the only creatures on earth that make milk for their babies. The milk is rich in vitamins, minerals, and all the other nutrients a baby animal needs.

What kind of skin do mammals have? Mammals are the only animals with hair. Mammal’s hair, which we often call its fur, protects it from wind, rain, sun, cold, insects, and other things.

What do mammals eat? Mammals eat many kinds of foods: plants, meat, fish, insects. Their teeth are designed for what they eat.

Where do mammals live? Mammals live on land, at sea, in the air, and under the ground.

How do they mate? Male and female mammals find each other during mating season and go their separate ways soon after, leaving the females to raise the babies. Most males fight to get their mate.

Are mammals useful to people? Yes, mammals are very important to people. People use mammal’s meat, milk and fur.

Can mammals learn new things? Mammals have larger, more well-developed brains than other animals. Most mammals have memories and are able to learn new things.

Interesting Facts The biggest mammal is the blue whale. The tallest mammal is the giraffe. The smallest mammals are the marsupials. The fastest mammal is the cheetah. The loudest mammal is the blue whale. The smelliest mammal is the striped skunk.
