Action Planning for Irish Birds

Contents Project Background Aims A Framework for Bird Conservation Consultation Next Steps John Fox John Carey Eddie Dunne Andrew Kelly

Project Background Funded through the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government Project initiated to tackle some of the issues raised by the European Court of Justice Ruling (C-418/04) against the Republic of Ireland in December 2007 Projects main concern: Protection of priority, migratory & dispersed birds in the wider countryside Colm Fitzpatrick

Aims of the Project To create Actions which, when implemented, will benefit birds in the wider countryside To inform relevant Irish policy on bird conservation issues & requirements To consult with relevant stakeholders to aid the implementation of Actions John Fox

A Framework for Bird Conservation in Ireland Tom Shevlin John Fox

The Framework Overview What is it? Why are we using it? Broad approach focusing on Bird Groups Group Action Plans will contain Actions to benefit multiple species and where necessary individual species Why are we using it? To provide a strong conservation base from which to protect a large number of species over a wide area in a short period of time John Carey

The Framework The Bird Groups Marine & Cliff Birds Shore & Lagoon Birds Dunes & Sandy Grassland Birds Lake, Fen & Turlough Birds Riparian Birds Lowland Farmland Birds Grassland Birds Urban/Suburban Birds Broadleaf, Mixed Woodland & Scrub Birds Plantation Woodland & Scrub Birds Upland Birds Raised Bog Birds Richard T. Mills Ken Kinsella

The Framework Action Plans Bird Group Action Plans John N Murphy Action Plans Bird Group Action Plans Bird Groups chosen using birds habitat preferences Covers all nationally important Red & Amber listed birds and all Annex I Birds Directive species which regularly occur in Ireland Single Species Action Plans will still be required for many priority species and both the SSAPs and the Framework will benefit each other forming a more coherent national conservation strategy

Consultation Stakeholder involvement will be essential if Actions are to be implemented Workshops will provide the initial method of stakeholder input but private consultation will also occur Input will be sought into the Action Plan targets, conservation issues, opportunities & measures John Carey

Next Steps Hardcopy documents will be created for each of the 12 Bird Group Action Plans An interactive website will be created that will be fully searchable allowing the user to obtain information relevant to them or more general information if required John Carey
