Quotation Marks in Dialogue Use quotation marks at the beginning and at the end of a direct quotation. Bill said, “My favorite sport is baseball.” “Do you want to go with me to the park Saturday?” asked Sarah.

Divided Quotation Marks When a direct quotation is divided into two or more parts by explanatory words (he exclaimed, she said, they reported), use quotation marks before and after each part of the quotation. “I can’t decide,” my sister commented, “whether to see a comedy or a horror film at the theater tonight.”

Single Quotations in Dialogue Use single quotation marks around a quotation within a quotation. “President Franklin D.
