BBC. Milo quiGley

Who we are. A British public service broadcaster, headquartered at the Broadcasting House in London. The world’s oldest national broadcasting organisation and the largest broadcaster in the world. Established under the Royal Charter and governed by the BBC Trust.

Structure and ownership. Publicly owned – broadcast what the public wants to see. They are funded through license fee payments and also government grants. Have a grand total of 35,402 employees all of whom are either part-time, flexible or fixed contract staff.

Main aims. Sustaining citizenship and civil society. Promoting education and learning. Stimulating creativity and cultural excellence. Representing the UK, its nations, regions and communities Bringing the UK to the world and the world to the UK. Delivering to the public the benefit of emerging communications technologies and services.

Competitors. Its main competitors include: Other broadcasters such as Sky, ITV and Channel 4 Streaming websites and apps such as YouTube, Love Film and Netflix.

Products. The BBC have created a massive amount of television programmes, films and books – both new and upcoming releases. Various forms of merchandise.

Services – television. The BBC operates several television channels in the UK: Two flagship channels – BBC One and BBC Two Several digital only stations – BBC Four, BBC News, BBC Parliament and two children’s channels, CBBC and CBeebies.

Services – radio and internet. Ten radio stations serving the whole of the UK, six serving the “national regions” and a further 40 local stations serving defined areas of England. The BBC’s online services includes a comprehensive news website and archive, sports headlines, weather updates and television and radio streaming.
