NOVEMBER 9, 2017, OTTAWA, ONTARIO SPARC’s Open Education Leadership Program Considering a CARL-Canadian edition NOVEMBER 9, 2017, OTTAWA, ONTARIO

Reflection questions What support does your library need to advance open education efforts on your campus? What are you missing that could be aided by collective action? How could CARL help? Joy explains the purpose of the discussion She suggests CARL directors note the following questions (could also have these on the table?) What support does your library need to advance open education resourcing/efforts at your library? How could CARL help? We have an idea. Let me introduce our participants on the call (next slide). I’m delighted to introduce ….

Our Remote Participants Nicole Allen, Director of Open Education for SPARC Hope Power, Teaching & Learning Librarian, Simon Fraser University and SPARC Open Education Leadership Fellow Stephanie Quail, Business Librarian, York University and SPARC Open Education Leadership Fellow Joy Welcomes and introduces our participants Explains the purpose of this discussion to think through the potential for a SPARC/CARL OER Leadership Institute stream The Advancing Research Committee will be working through a draft proposal and we would appreciate your input. First, We will have Nicole describe the program and then ask Hope and Stephanie to share some highlights of their experience.

SPARC Open Education Leadership Program Nicole might like to mention materials and program available here?

SPARC Open Education Leadership Program 2-semester professional development initiative aimed at building expertise and capacity to advance open education in libraries designed for (primarily early-career) academic and research library professionals at colleges and universities in US & Canada blends online, peer-to-peer, and project-based learning opportunities those who complete the program receive certificate & title of SPARC Open Education Leadership Fellow

2017-2018 Pilot

2017-2018 Pilot Pilot currently underway 14 fellows have been selected from SPARC member libraries (2 from Canadian universities) fellows are both students and creators; they help evaluate and improve the curriculum all course content and curricular resources will be published under a Creative Commons Attribution license Joy asks Hope and Stephanie to share their experiences so far or Highlights: [Possible questions to answer but feel free to write your own highlight of course! What has been most instructive so far? What is most valuable so far? How are you being inspired?] Hope Stephanie

Questions for discussion: Reflecting back on the earlier questions, what would you envision as a CARL contribution to this effort in Canada? What would a Canadian track of this program look like? Do we need this leadership institute or a more introductory program on OER (or both)? What format would be best (online or in person)? Who would you imagine should be our partners on such an initiative (in addition to SPARC)? Joy to CARL Directors: As you reflect on the earlier questions: What support does your library need to advance open education efforts on your campus? What are you missing that could be aided by collective action? How could CARL help? Understanding that this is a leadership program

Questions for our Remote Participants Nicole Allen, Director of Open Education for SPARC Hope Power, Teaching & Learning Librarian, Simon Fraser University and SPARC Open Education Leadership Fellow Stephanie Quail, Business Librarian, York University and SPARC Open Education Leadership Fellow Questions for our participants

Thank you! Many thanks to our participants and do all of you for this engagement.
