Taft supported many of Roosevelt’s Progressive causes but had a very different style. new safety laws for miners, eight-hour work day, and laws against child labor. Children’s Bureau Investigates child labor, abuse, adoption and foster care Bureau of Mines Monitor mining companies, expanded national forests, protected waterpower William Taft Lost support when he signed a bill that raised most tariffs (taxes). Payne-Aldrich Tariff Broke up trusts (2x as many as TR) 16th Amendment fired a high-level Forest Service official over a dispute about wilderness in Alaska. many Progressives thought he was blocking conservation efforts. 17th Amendment

After Taft takes office, Roosevelt leaves the country. Roosevelt returns upset over stories of Taft betraying progressives Progressives convince Roosevelt to reenter politics.
