2. Trust Buster
Teddy saw a difference between good and bad trusts. His goal was to dissolve bad trusts.
The “bad trusts” would lower their prices to drive competition out of business and use other unfair trade practices. He used the Sherman Antitrust Act as his guide.

Northern Securities Case- This company controlled the RR system and was ordered to dissolve.
Hepburn Act- limited the distribution of free RR passes used for bribery. Allowed the ICC to set max rate.

Meat Inspection Act- set up guidelines for cleanliness and created the program of federal meat inspectors. Problems were no dates were required on canned goods and companies could appeal findings.

8. Reactions to Labor Disputes
Coal Strike- Pennsylvania coal miners went on strike for higher wages. Five months into it there became major shortages of coal effects schools, factories, and hospitals.

Roosevelt called the union bosses and the owners to meet in Washington. After this it was expected that Washington would intervene in every strike.

10. Labor Laws
Employers Liability Act- Employers must provide insurance for workers hurt on interstate RR.
Muller v. Oregon- Court let state set limits on women’s hours. This law keep women out of high paying jobs.

11. Taft
Taft the trust buster he busted 90 trusts in four and Roosevelt only broke 44 in 7 1/2 years.
Taft’s biggest trust break was Standard Oil Company.
Mann-Elkins Act- gave the government the right to regulate telephones and telegraphs.
Payne- Aldrich Act- raised tariffs.
16th Amendment- authorized Congress to impose an income tax.

12. Taft’s Mistake Taft fired Pinchot after a disagreement
This was a mistake that upset the Progressive faction of the Republican Party.
The action led Roosevelt to seek the party nomination. The party gave the nomination to Taft.
Roosevelt started a third party.

13. Bull Moose Party
Teddy’s new party was the named the Bull Moose Party.
This third party split the vote of the Republicans between Taft and Roosevelt
The split vote led to an easy victory for Woodrow Wilson
