What is Product Analysis? This is a form of primary research, It involves looking at existing products, Working out how they were made, Seeing what features might be useful to a new design

Product Analysis What do we look at? Materials – What are they made from and why? Function – What is the product designed for? How does it work? How can it be maintained? Target Market – Who is it designed for? Ergonomics – Has the product been designed to suit the user? How easy was it to assemble? Manufacturing - How is it manufactured? How can we produce something similar in school? Style – How can you describe the style? Is it modern? Has it been influenced by a design movement?

Product Analysis Who is it designed for? How does this impact on the design? What are they made from and why? Has the product been designed to suit the user? How easy is it to assemble? How can you describe the style? Is it modern? Has it been influenced by a design movement? What is the product designed for? How does it work? How can it be maintained? How can it be improved How can we make something like it in school? (you might have to change the material) Does it stand safely? Is the load evenly distributed? Can you touch the bulb? How is the shade held, can it be secured, is it safe? How has it been packaged? Is it secure? How does it impact on the environment? How big is it? How heavy is it?

Product Analysis How can you describe the style? Is it modern? Has it been influenced by a design movement? What is the product designed for? How does it work? How can it be maintained?

Product Analysis This is a fun trendy children's light. That is almost animal or alien like, yet friendly and appealing to children. Spins and gives an effective moving light by the heat from the bulb.

Product Analysis Does it stand safely? Is the load evenly distributed? Can you touch the bulb? How is the shade held, can it be secured, is it safe?

Product Analysis This is safe for children as the bulb is covered, there are air vents so that the shade doesn’t get hot. These vents also cast interesting shadows. The three legs make it stand safely.

Product Analysis What are the parts made from and why?

Product Analysis Polypropylene injection moulded shade. Mild Steel legs, welded together with a powder coated finish.

Product Analysis How can we make something like it in school? (you might have to change the material)

Product Analysis Brazing the legs together. Vacuum forming a shade. Printable acetate for the coloured section.

Product Analysis How big is it? How heavy is it?

Product Analysis Diameter: 14 cm Height: 19 cm Cord length: 2.5 m Lightweight

Product Analysis Who is it designed for? How does this impact on the design?

Product Analysis This is aimed at children. Even babies, as it moves, also trendy teenagers.

Product Analysis Has the product been designed to suit the user? How easy is it to assemble?

Product Analysis The switch is easy for a child to work, the bulb is easy to change for an adult but not a child. As you need to turn the shade from the top.

Product Analysis How has it been packaged? Is it secure? How does it impact on the environment?

Product Analysis In a printed corrugated card box, this is not overly printed so it is easy to recycle.
