1 · Purpose – what is the purpose behind your design?
Set this out like a list – use the headings as sub headings and then bullet point the list from there. Look to get around 2- 3 individual points from each sub heading. In total there should be at least 20 different points for your design. · Purpose – what is the purpose behind your design? ‘I am designing and making a piece of nursery school furniture…’ and then be more specific, so state the line of furniture – seating, storage etc · Aesthetics – how will it look/appear to look – what finish will it have? ‘It must look attractive to the eye, with a clear, clean and bright finish to it’ Be specific, state what kind of paint you will use etc · Functional characteristics – what will it do? Seat a small child… ‘It must…’ · Safety – must not have sharp corners/edges, no nails sticking out, must not be top heavy and so fall over often, find H&S laws and standards… · Scale of production – mass produced, batch produced, one off? · Form – shape and style of the product – does it follow a specific style such as Art Deco or a specific designer like Mackintosh or is it just modern and simple? · Budget constraints – depending on your scale of production will make the cost different, think about materials, sale of product, profit… · Time and resources – how long it is going to take to design and make? What resources are you going to need and are they easily available? · User requirements – What does the person using your product need from it? Why do they need it? How will your design satisfy your needs?
