LANGUAGE AND ELECTIVE STUDIES, SUMMER 2018 INFO SESSION 13 November 2017 Mari Syväoja

The min. requirements for the language and communication studies (21 cr) in the BScBA degree program (DR 2013): Foreign language I - English Business Communication 3 cr Academic Writing 6 cr Foreign language II Spanish, German or French 6 cr Finnish and Swedish Finnish Business Communication or Finnish for Foreigners 3 cr Swedish Business Communication 3 cr

COURSE OFFERINGS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE II Spanish Basics in Business Spanish (6 cr) - Basics in Business Spanish 1 (3 cr) - Basics in Business Spanish 2 (3 cr) Spanish Business Communication 1 (6 cr) - Spanish Business Communication 1a (3 cr) - Spanish Business Communication 1b (3 cr) French Basics in Business French (6 cr) - Basics in Business French 1 (3 cr) - Basics in Business French 2 (3 cr) French Business Communication 1 (6 cr) - French Business Communication 1a (3 cr) - French Business Communication 1b (3 cr)

COURSE OFFERINGS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE II (continues) German Basics in Business German (6 cr) - Basics in Business German 1 (3 cr) - Basics in Business German 2 (3 cr) German Business Communication 1 (6 cr) - German Business Communication 1a (3 cr) - German Business Communication 1b (3 cr)

POSSIBLE NEW LANGUAGE COURSE AS THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE II For planning purposes we would also like to know your interest in possible other language: Russian Mandarin Italian In case you prefer to study one of the languages above instead of Spanish, German or French in summer 2018, please let us know your first preference in the form. Please note that by marking one of these languages as your first preference, you commit to studying it instead of Spanish, German or French in case there will be enough demand for the extra language in question and we decide to offer it summer 2018.

Minimum requirement in the foreign language II: 6 credits Every student can choose only one of the offered foreign languages: Spanish, French or German (or another language, if it will be offered). Minimum requirement for the degree is 6 credits. BScBA students can include one basic course “package” (= alkeiskurssi) of 6 cr (Spanish, French or German) as part of required language and communication studies for the degree.

More than 6 credits in the foreign language II If a student wants to do both the basic course “package” (6 cr) and the business communication course “package” (6 cr), the other 6 cr can be counted as elective studies.

Exemptions for Finnish and Swedish studies If your secondary education is done in any other language than Finnish or Swedish or abroad, you might not need to do the Finnish language (3 cr) and Swedish language (3 cr) courses. -> exemption decisions in process and coming soon to the students individually by email Finnish for Foreigners (3 cr) offered for the foreign students. The missing credits for BScBA degree are completed by taking more credits in one of the foreign languages II or a communication-related elective course

Exemptions for Finnish and Swedish studies (continues) Example: Finnish for Foreigners (3 cr) to be studied by a foreign student, but she is exempted from completing the Swedish language course (3 cr). -> The missing 3 credits are completed by taking 3 extra credits in one of the foreign languages II (for example Spanish), so the student will complete 9 cr in total: - Basics in Business Spanish 1 (3 cr) - Basics in Business Spanish 2 (3 cr) - Spanish Business Communication 1a (3 cr)

Beginning level Please see the Common European Framework to choose your beginning levels in each language. In general it can be said that in order to participate Business Communication 1 level courses, the student has to have done either - Basic level courses in that language (6 cr) or - studied it in high school (”vähintään lukion lyhyen oppimäärän tiedot ko. kielessä”).

Swedish and Finnish language courses In module 9 (3 weeks; separate schedule for contact hours): Swedish Business Communication (3 cr) In modules 9 and 11 (3+2 weeks): Finnish for Foreigners (3 cr) In module 11 (2 weeks): Finnish Business Communication (3 cr) Groups and schedules will be announced later.

STEP1 in this registration process: You need to inform us your preferences (1-3 or 1-4) concerning the choice of the second foreign language (Spanish, French or German + possible other language). Use the electronic registration from available on Into. Please return the form to Mari Syväoja by email by 22 November 2017. After we have made a decision for the language course offerings, you will get information on the language groups.

STEP 2 in this registration process: After we have announced the language groups, you can register for the business courses of the summer 2018 (done most likely in Jan-Feb 2018). * Please see the list of courses in the course schedule. There will be an electronic registration form you need to return to Mari Syväoja. * NOTE. There will not be any separate info session anymore for summer business courses. These registrations will be confirmed to you by email after the course registration process is completed by the staff.
