What is Colloquial? informal diction reflects casual, conversational language includes slang expressions Simplify formal writing Happy medium Super Ego, Ego, ID

What is colloquial? Use of words such as: Pronunciation of words Want to-Wanna Going to-Gonna You all-Y’all Having a joke-he’s pulling my leg I don’t know-dunno He watches too much tv-he is a couch potato Pronunciation of words Creek pronounced as crick Water pronounced as wuder

When you would use Colloquial.. Creative writing (most common) Introduction Closing Dialogue Analysis of quote Speaking outloud

How to use colloquial Introduction and closing- opinion Quote: Almost five years! There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams--not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out with every bright feather that drifted his way (87). Analysis: The description of Gatsby's dream matches the description of everything he does, from his parties to his automobile to his suits. Nick points out that the real Daisy cannot possibly live up to the imagined Daisy, something Gatsby never admits. It's like the time I took my kids to the Grand Canyon. I had pictured in my mind a glorious day in the world's most popular national park. It turned out to be a day of blistering heat, crying children, and annoying tourists. I feel your pain, Jay. I feel your pain. Introduction and closing- opinion Creative writing- connect to your reader Dialogue- connect to your reader Analysis of quote- Long quote, “in other words,” “meaning…” (simplify)

Problems narrows down audience because older people wont understand the slang cannot use it in formal writing usually can get confusing for people trying to learn English

Example “What’s up?” Christine said to her BFF, Morgan. “Yo! OMG! Did you catch the season finale of Pretty Little Liars last night?” “Nah, I was chillin’ wit my boy.” The girls walked to class together and were gonna skip when they saw they had a sub but changed their mind and decided to go and just take a lil’ nap.

Colloquial or not? “Hey Ashley! Are you going to be in class today?” “That girl in my science class is beautiful. I want to ask her out on a date.” “R U comin 2 class?” “Dat girl is bad as hell, I wanna holla at her bro!”

Quote The grub that my Dad served for dinner was great. I thought he was pulling my leg when he said he made my favorite meal, but he was not. He makes me dinner biweekly, and always serves it with a cocoa-cola. I dunno if I’ll ever stop coming over for dinner.

Write a formal paragraph with a conversation. (no slang) Exercise Write a formal paragraph with a conversation. (no slang) Write the same paragraph using colloquial. Analyze this quote using colloquial.
