1 CP ENGLISH 10 TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6TH
Please have out your binders. Today we will be having a “creative battle” incorporating voice and style. Sit wherever! 

2 Let’s Review… According to your notes, what is a character?
What is the definition of a character trait? Give me an external characteristic of Holden Caulfield. Give me an example of an internal personality characteristic of Holden Caulfield by identifying one of his traits: He is always __________________, so he must be ____________________.

3 Record the following term in your “terminology section”:
Voice – the characteristic speech and thought patterns of a first-person narrator. Because voice has so much to do with the reader's experience of a work of literature, it is one of the most important elements of a piece of writing. CONCENTRATE ON: Diction Tone

4 *Add to terminology Diction - word choice.
Formal Diction Casual Diction Slang (very informal) are not angry aren't mad ain't ticked  Label each sentence as formal, casual, or slang based on its diction. Let’s go get some dinner. It is vital to understand the text one reads. Computers are a pain in the neck. With whom did you study? Pickett’s charge at the Battle of Gettysburg was surely an awe-inspiring sight.

5 Holden’s speech - formal, casual, or slang based on its diction?
“If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.”

6 *Add to terminology Tone - is an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience.
Example #1 Father: “We are going on a vacation.” Son: “That’s great!!!” The tone of the son’s response is very cheerful. Example #2 Father: “We can’t go on vacation this summer.” Son: “Oh, great. Just what I wanted. To be home all stinking summer.” The son’s tone is sarcastic in the given response.

7 What about this one? “Can someone tell me what the hell is going on here?” This has a/an ___________ tone.

8 And this one? “I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.” - This has a/an ___________ tone. - What words led you to this conclusion?

9 What kind of tone does Holden create in these quotes?
“If a girl looks swell when she meets you, who gives a damn if she’s late? Nobody.” “Goddamn money. It always ends up making you blue as hell.”

10 Record the following terms in your “terminology section”:
Author’s Style - the way the author uses words and literary devices to express mood, tone, and meaning. AKA: the quality that makes his or her writing unique, and which conveys the author's attitude, personality, and character. Salinger’s style of writing is VERY unique for Holden Caulfield. If you were to take a different story, and write it utilizing the voice of Holden Caulfield, it would be a very interesting tale. No kidding. It really would.

11 Catch Her in the Oatmeal The story of Goldilocks written using the voice of Holden Caulfield and the style of J.D. Salinger Choosing your character: Humpty Dumpty -- Hansel (or) Gretel Cinderella -- Aladdin Snow White -- Simba The Tortoise -- Alice in Wonderland The Hare -- Little Red Riding Hood Sleeping Beauty -- Nemo
