Summary Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a famous fantasy book by Roald Dahl. Mr. Willy Wonka releases five Golden Tickets within his chocolate bars. Anyone that receives a ticket is invited to tour Mr. Wonka’s chocolate factory and see his workers, Oompa- Loompas, produce his tasty candies with one guest of their choice. Charlie Bucket, a poorer polite boy, is invited to tour the factory and he chooses to bring his grandfather, Grandpa Joe. The day at the factory is filled with lots of candy, but also lots of adventure. Throughout the magical day Mr. Wonka secretively gives each child a chance to show their personality through a set of moral challenges. Only at the end does Mr. Wonka reveal his true reason for inviting people into his factory! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a world-famous book that is now also a movie. Roald Dahl also wrote The Missing Golden Ticket and Other Splendiferous Secrets, and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator as the sequels to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Explore cause and effect! Analyze, compare and contrast a multitude of sources (ex: book, play, movie)! Identify a main idea/theme! It is important to remember that these stories can be read and explored in a multitude of ways! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a book, movie, play, etc. Educators can have students visit the Roald Dahl Museum, for example! Ideas taken from Roald Dahl website. Mini Lesson The book is best for students 3rd through 5th grade to read independently, but is highly dependent on the reading ability of the student. This book is most appropriate for students age 7+ (however younger students will need help reading it). Mini-Lesson: Fourth-grade students will independently read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in their reading groups over a two-week period. Students will use class time used for independent reading and time at home to read the story. Students will then answer discussion questions (provided by the teacher) each day in the classroom within their reading groups. *Note: reading groups were created by the teacher based on ability. After completing the book, students will create a newspaper article independently capturing the most important events from the story.
