PT 1

Where does the OLB lineup and who is his usual opponent? Traditionally a outside linebacker is lined up on the edge of the line, outside of the offensive tackle. By being lined up outside of the tackle he is my usual deterrent from me making a play on the ball. To play OLB you must be fast as you are flexible and Quic

OLB OBJECTIVE The outside linebackers main objective is to contain the outside and put pressure on the Quarterback (QB) in passing situations.

Special Characteristics of being A OLB In order to play the edge you must have these three things to be successful…. Speed Explosion Power Without these components the probability of you making a play on the ball is slim

Different Phases and Elements For Playing OLB In Football the Defense and Offense are given a set of plays which show them where they are to line up and what is their goal for that particular play. The first thing a OLB and any other position on the field needs to know before coming off the ball and making a play is his Alignment & Assignment. If the player doesn’t know his alignment then he cause a gap to open up which may allow space for his opponent to make a play. Next you need to know your assignment that is key aswell. Your assignment is what you must do for that designed play.If I do not know my assignment then I do not know my objective for that play and that can throw the whole defense out of whack.

OLB MECHANICS I am usually in a staggered stance which has no stability even though this stance doesn’t give me balance it allows me to be more explosive off the ball. A repetitive skill that I must always use when coming off the ball is using my hands. The only way to be successful when going against a Offensive Lineman is to create separation between you and him. In order to create separation you must have strong triceps, biceps pictorials and also a strong core to do this. A Offensive Lineman has more mass and inertia then I have, so the best way for me to be able to get pass them is to get their momentum going one way and once their momentum is flowing they usually don’t have enough balance to set and still maintain blocking me.

Three Most Common Pass Rush Moves THE DIP AND RIP When using the dip and rip you must be very flexible, and quick. The dip and rip is best used when an Offensive Tackle is standing to tall. By lowering your center of gravity you allow yourself to get under him and allow yourself to make a play THE SPIN The spin requires a lot of torque, it allows you to get your opponents momentum going one way and stability another.Once their momentum has shifted you then spin back and allow yourself to make a play on the ball T= R x F THE BULL RUSH The best time to use the bull rush is when the Offensive Tackle is on his heels. Once the lineman is on his heels he has no base or stability which allows you to then go through him and make a play on the ball.

THE PHYSICS IN THE PASS RUSH The Dip and Rip The Spin The Bull Rush
