What is Community Design? “Urban Design is the art of making successful places for people.” - Graeme

What is Community Design? Community (Urban) Design - involves the arrangement of the elements that make up a city or town including buildings, public spaces, transportation systems, streets, landscape, housing, and food resources. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5ot_1tbQX8

7 Elements of Good Design A well design community will have… An emphasis on the pedestrian Good transportation systems. Good public space. A sense of identity. Green spaces. Access to healthy food. Housing for all citizens.

1) Pedestrian Emphasis Walkability Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifKOB-d3uds

1) Pedestrian Emphasis Walkable communities have generous sidewalks and engaging street fronts. Walkable communities have a variety of building uses within walking distance of one another.

2) Transportation Transportation systems connect the parts of cities and enable movement throughout them. A well designed community will have a variety of transportation options that cater to different needs of the people. This street caters to a variety of transportation modes: accommodates cars, buses, bikes, and pedestrians. Light rails provide a fast and easy choice for transportation.

2) Transportation Active Transportation Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmzNa648_P0

3) Public Space Great public spaces give life to a city. Pioneer Square, Portland, OR Millennium Park, Chicago, IL

4) Identity Creating a “sense of place” is giving a unique identity to the area. Iconic Structures: Eiffel Tower Paris, France Cultural Events: Dinagyang Festival Iloilo City, The Philippines

4) Identity “If you don’t know where you are, you don’t know who you are.” - Wallace Stegner Public Art: The Cloud Gate, a.k.a. “The Bean” Chicago, IL Architectural Style: Italian Renaissance Florence, Italy

5) Green Space Green spaces such as parks and landscaping add to the beauty and identity of a community. Savannah, GA has parks multiple parks and tree lined streets in its plan.

5) Green Space Greenways and parks increase the health of a community by promoting physical activity.

6) Housing Different housing options allow people of different ages, incomes, and stages of life to live the same community.

7) Food Access Community gardens and farmer’s markets help make healthy food accessible.
